30. Last week I got a $25 gift certificate for Amazon.com so I got to order three books for cheap, and they arrived in the mail today. Yay! I've been having a sort of stressful day on the Internet so I wanted to get away for a while, and my roommate suggested that rather than go somewhere else I just take a blanket out on the lawn and sit and read there for a while, and I did, and it was really nice, warm and sunny but with a nice breeze. I started reading Reza Aslan's book No god but God: The Origins, Evolution, and Future of Islam, and it is really good so far. (Claudia, I think you would like it!)

Also last night I made some brownies and they are delicious. And the party I brought them to was way more fun than I was expecting.

31. omg I finished the happiness meme! Finished both in the sense of "yay I did what I set out to do and stuck with it through the month" and also in the sense of "yay it's over!" I didn't enjoy it quite as much as last August and also don't think I did as good a job – like last year I did more posts of several paragraphs really explaining why I liked something – and I didn't enjoy it quite as much, but it was still fun. I don't know, I still don't think I'm a post-ever-day kind of girl but it has been sort of nice to have an excuse to post about random nice stuff. I don't know how August will be.

Here are three small pieces of computer-related happiness:

27. Computer parts arriving quickly
Sunday I was upset because my laptop battery, which is less than two years old, is such junk that it lasts about fifteen minutes, and my power adapter started getting fussy on Sunday so it had to be positioned just so in order to get it to work. So I sent away for new ones to replace them, and I am happy about how quickly the replacements arrived – the adapter yesterday and the battery today.

28. LJ and Dreamwidth stuff
a. ?style=mine is so great! this and preview working on Dreamwidth )

29. Watching TV on the Internet
Sometimes I do downloads but today I will just talk about how much I love legitimate ways of watching TV on the Internet, like hulu.com and Netflix. If you have a membership with Netflix there are also a whole lot of movies and TV shows that you can watch streaming on the Internet for free. I watched the whole first season of New Who this way and then I was hooked so I watched the rest on DVD. For a long time they only had this set up to work on Internet Explorer but now it works on Firefox too. Hooray! I watch The Daily Show on Hulu and have watched some other shows on their networks' websites, though those tend not to work as well. This works so well for me. The only TV in our apartment is a tiny one with bad reception in my roommate's bedroom, but when I watch on my laptop it's right in front of me and I usually wear headphones and it is just generally really convenient and nice. I love that I no longer have to pay attention to when my favorite shows are on or make sure I record them or whatever. I just go and get them whenever I want to watch them.

I like commenting on fic that I read. It makes me happy to know that I'm encouraging authors that I like and making them feel good. This is a nice, easy way of participating in fandom even at times when I'm not feeling creative or finishing any stories myself. Reading a fic I like and not commenting makes me feel bad – it's true I often neglect to do it if I have to e-mail, but LJ/IJ/Dth makes it so easy, it seems silly not to. cut for length )

Anyway, the real reason for this post is that I signed up at [livejournal.com profile] idof_feedback to comment on 20 femslash fanworks by July 25th, and one of the requirements is to link to all the fanworks somewhere, so I'm doing it beneath the cut and will add to it as I go along. I'm at 12 so far so I expect to go over 20, especially with all the new stuff that's now available at [livejournal.com profile] remixredux09 and [livejournal.com profile] femslash09. I'm enjoying this – it sort of reminds me of [livejournal.com profile] 50books_poc where it's worth it to go out of my way to read something that I wouldn't necessarily pick up otherwise, and I sometimes find that I love it and sometimes not so much. I'm starting to get a better idea of my own taste in femslash and to look differently at how a lot of other fanfics neglect female characters.

I liked all of these fics (or I wouldn't have read them!) but I especially want to recommend What We've Become by [livejournal.com profile] thedeadparrot and What We've Become (The Mt. Saint Helens Remix), both Donna/Martha fics. When I was talking the other day about how much I like Gwen/Morgana I was sort of comparing it in my mind to shows like Doctor Who where you usually only get to have one female character at a time and I always thought femslash would be hard because the companions relate to each other through the Doctor, and some fans tend to pit the companions against each other and all that. Anyway, I really liked the Donna/Martha relationship being about Donna and Martha in both of these, and the Doctor and Jack being present but secondary to the women's story. Also they're just so well written. I wasn't crazy about the jumping around in time on the remix but I think it's still my favorite of the [livejournal.com profile] remixredux09 stories I've read so far. links )

Happy birthday, [livejournal.com profile] mews1945! You are one of those people whose birthday becomes a holiday for the whole fandom because you're so important to us. Last week we all got to read the reports of the long expected party in Maryland and today we're partying on LJ. I hope you're having a good time. *hugs*

Today is also International Day of Femslash. I meant to write some fic but the day sort of snuck up on me (by being a week after the Remix deadline but also right at the Remix deadline at the same time) and I have some rl work this weekend so I probably won't get to it. :/

Still, it seems like a good time to say that Gwen and Morgana on Merlin make me really happy. It's true I've been reading Arthur/Merlin but I love that my new fandom also has these two women who are good people and who clearly care about each other and show affection for each other. I like that they were friends before Merlin came onto the scene and that their relationship isn't oriented around the guys. And since the show is not all about shipping either of them with Arthur or Merlin, fandom doesn't feel the need to do bad things to them or make them evil in order to get their guys together. There's a lot of Gwen/Morgana fic out there but there's also a lot of Arthur/Merlin that has Gwen/Morgana as a secondary pairing or all of them as friends. Whether or not femslash is your thing it is nice to have these women on TV who like each other, as we women like each other in real life.

Today I had lunch at a Chinese restaurant and my fortune cookie said, "Share your happiness with others today." :D

I'm happy because [livejournal.com profile] smaragbird wrote a New Year's Resolution fic for Yuletide based on my request for a story about Luke (that is Chiwetel Ejiofor's character) from Children of Men and his mention toward the end of the movie that he had a sister. Children of Men fic, you guys, I'm not the only one who writes it hooray! [livejournal.com profile] smaragbird did Luke/Patrick growing up and falling in love as the world is falling apart! Go read it and share in my angsty apocalyptic happiness! Children of the Fall

In other news, the preview function on Dreamwidth never works for me. I always just get a message saying, "Sorry, there was a problem." I don't see this as a known issue on the Support page. Has anyone else run into it? I don't like not being able to test my (frequently faulty) html before I hit post.

I think I'm happy that I imported/exported my journal to Dreamwidth today. Anyway I'm happy that it seemed to go very smoothly and only took a couple minutes. I was worried that all my old entries would flood the "reading" pages of my "subscribers" but they don't seem to have shown up there at all, so that's a relief. :) I have no intention of leaving LJ or disabling comments on LJ posts, but I think it'll be nice to have the other one in addition and maybe I'll get to meet some new people, which is always nice. The truth is I feel a little nervous and shy about posting to Dth (following [livejournal.com profile] iamsab I'm using this abbreviation instead of DW because, omg, Doctor Who), that it seems more public somehow even though I'll be using the same security settings I do on LJ and I haven't really given any new people access there, though I probably will in the future. Anyway, I've been meaning to copy and start crossposting for a while so it's exciting to finally be doing it.

I'm also happy that people are commenting on the writing meme I posted earlier today and in particular that a couple people have continued things I was writing. (LotR and Merlin fandoms so far but I'm planning on adding a new one in a bit and maybe I'll get some other prompts…) Usually commentfic is not my favorite thing because it's harder to edit and tag and index than fic in its own post, but I also really like the back and forth of writing with other people and wish I got to do it more often. I think it would be really neat if some of the threads branched off in different directions with different writers, like starting from [livejournal.com profile] claudia603's or [livejournal.com profile] baranduin's first line you could go any direction with any fandom you wanted.

I missed yesterday so I'm one post behind, will catch up some other time.

Today I'm happy that so many of my friends were able to get together this past weekend and especially that you all had a good party for [livejournal.com profile] mews1945. Moots are so awesome. I'm really glad you guys had a good time..

I'm happy for the fans who are going to Azkatraz next weekend.

I've never been to a con but that's probably just as well because I think I would have been stressed. :) I'm happy for the chances I've had to meet up with other fans in Houston in 2006 and 2007, Chicago in 2007, and Seattle the last two years, plus the extra little meet-ups I've had with [livejournal.com profile] danae_b and [livejournal.com profile] claudia603. I love interacting with you all online but it's been a completely different feeling since I started getting to meet you in person too.

Today I'm happy that it's cloudy and that it has been since Monday. This is the kind of weather [livejournal.com profile] baranduin likes, I think – cool, with a light breeze, some light rain from time to time. It's not usually my favorite but it's been nice for the sunburn recovery process. The skin on my face started peeling yesterday. My chest is still bright red and hurts, but a little less than it hurt two days ago.

I had a nice time playing with some MacBooks at the store yesterday. I had less fun with the netbooks but that might be because that particular store had very little interest in selling them. The salesperson I talked to was sort of what I think of as a stereotypical Mac guy – like, younger and cooler and better looking than me, not trying to lord it over you or do a hard sell, just really laid back and confident in the knowledge that his computer is a thousand times better than yours. :) I'm thinking I'm going to hold off on buying anything for now (will maybe wait and see how much money I have in late August, also see if the warranty on my old computer is good for anything), but I do want my next computer to be a Mac.

Okay, I'm doing this:
For every day this month, post about something that makes you happy.
I did this in August of last year and it was great. It got me to post more and when I wasn't online I spent a lot of extra time thinking about things that make me happy and how to talk about them, which helped my general mood. I might not post every day but I intend to post about 31 things. Some of these posts will be friends locked.

Today I'm happy that it's July 1st. When I posted yesterday I was thinking it was July 1st already, but it was only June 30th. This means that I'm less behind than I thought, I have one more day than I thought to write my remix, and I still have time to do [livejournal.com profile] lotr_fic_recs mod stuff later today. This reminds me of starting daylight savings time in the fall or of finding a five-dollar bill in a coat I haven't warn in six months.

I'm also happy that my f-list is so great and helpful. Like I love that we came here for hobbits or other fannish reasons and since we're friends we help each other out with major life stuff but we can also help with little things like whether you can take knitting needles on a plane and whether owning a Mac will actually make you feel cooler. Thank you!

I just love playing Scrabble. I've enjoyed playing it with my family since I was a kid and I have great memories of playing late at night with my friends in our college dorm rooms. There is something so very satisfying about making a really good move, something that not everyone would have thought of. I really like winning but I also like it when the people I'm playing against do well. When we play with my family we never challenge each other's words – we let each other look up words in the dictionary ahead of time so that we can come up with really good ones.

I've mentioned before that the main reason I joined Facebook a few months ago was so that I could play the Scrabulous (which is pretty much the same game but not officially associated). Well, Scrabulous got kicked off Facebook last month but in a way that's even better because now I can play it at scrabulous.com and it doesn't matter whether the players have Facebook accounts or not. I've been playing with my brother for a few months and just started playing with [livejournal.com profile] shirebound and [livejournal.com profile] baranduin this week. If you'd like to play Scrabulous with me comment with your e-mail address or send me an e-mail (my username at gmail) and let me know whether you prefer the American or British wordlist, and I'll set up a game for us. You get an e-mail when it's your turn to make a move and you can go back to it whenever you want, so it doesn't matter if you don't have much time to play.

Here's a link to a happy-making Doctor Who fanvid: Shine by [livejournal.com profile] futuresoon, music by Carbon Leaf and images from all four seasons of New Who (so, you know, spoilery to some extent). It has a lot of the Doctor and companions hugging and kissing and smiling and good stuff like that. You can tell [livejournal.com profile] futuresoon how much you liked it on this post.

Today I'm happy that Barack Obama is our candidate and I think he'll be our next president. He's not perfect but I think he's the best major-party presidential candidate I've ever had the chance to vote for and I'm excited about that. And of the people who seem to have been on the short list I'm really glad he went with Biden.

Today I parallel parked. Twice! Yes, it was a big space on a street with no traffic and it still took me five minutes and a lot of stress each time, but still! I did it!

It's hot and I'm sad with post-moot blues, and feeling bad because I didn't do the Serious things I'd intended to do today, but whatever. (I parallel parked!) I think I'm going to go out now and see Tropic Thunder.

Hey, Claudia! I had lunch at a Indian-Caribbean restaurant today! I ordered a roti with potato and chickpea curry and it was very yummy. I'm going to have the leftovers for dinner in a little bit.

*

Today I'm happy because I have a working bike. I bought this bike about five years ago but stopped using it around three years ago when I moved to an apartment at the top of a hill. :) It was in bad shape then but I never bothered to take it in to get it fixed until last week because it just wouldn't be practical or fun for me to bike anywhere from there. But I finally took it in last week and was able to pick it up this afternoon. My parents' neighborhood is awesome for biking and I just went for a very short ride by the nearest lake, and it was absolutely lovely. I'll be out of town for the next few days but at least I should be able to use it a little more before the end of the summer.

Of course I'm also happy that I'm leaving for Seattle tomorrow and will be seeing some of my dearest friends in the next few days, but I'm saving that for future posts. Whoo!

I really like Coldplay's new album, Viva la Vida. I think I like it as a whole album better than A Rush of Blood and X and Y even though those have some songs that I like better than any of the new songs. Most of the new songs don't really stick out to me but I like the way they fit together. I think Parachutes is still my favorite but I've only had the new one for a week so it's hard to say.

Sometimes I'm embarrassed by how much I love Coldplay (and U2), like if I were really cool I'd be into some indie bands nobody else had ever heard of. Read more... )

Today I'm happy that I've stuck to my tiny daily writing goals so far this month. I've written at least 100 words of fic every day, most of it on my Doctor Who fic for the [livejournal.com profile] tindogs_fic exchange. To be honest, this is really not going very well. I've been treating it like a chore and not enjoying it much at all. Most days as soon as I get over the 100 words (which is really very little) I stop and go to do something easier. Connected to that, what I've written has been pretty bad and I still don't know what I'm doing with the story, which needs to be posted by the end of the month. I like the assignment I got but I'm not sure it was a great idea to jump into a new fandom with an exchange where I'll really be letting someone down if I don't finish or if my story sucks. :( I just don't know what I'm doing, writing wise; I feel disconnected from my old hobbit stuff but I haven't found my place with a new fandom either. Still, I am proud for having stuck to the resolution at least, and today I brought it over 1000 words, which is the fest minimum, so that is a happy-making milestone.

I've also stuck with doing this happy meme every day since I started on the second, and I'm feeling really good about that. I worry that I'll run out of happy things to post about and that keeps me looking for them all the time, even looking for the bright side of things that bug me. For instance, yesterday almost as soon as I realized I'd gotten my period I started trying to spin it into something positive (not pregnant, will have most of it over with when I travel next week, etc.). It's nice having an excuse to post about stuff that's not newsworthy or profound but that's on my mind but that could be a chance for a connection with one or two people on my f-list. And of course it cheers me up to write them out.

I'm not sure how well I'll be able to keep up with either of these things while I'm in Seattle next week (the 13th to the 18th) or once school starts up at the end of the month, but I will try. Heck, maybe being busier will be good for me and help me get organized and motivated, or something.

Happiness meme: Today I'm happy because I have new shoes that are both comfortable and very cute. This is the second pair of Sketchers I've bought this year. I bought the other pair mostly because I liked how they look but they turned out to be great for walking too, so I'm happy to have these new ones, which are almost as funky and look like they'll be slightly better for walking.

We are looking for good Pippin fics at [livejournal.com profile] lotr_fic_recs. It was great to get a rec from [livejournal.com profile] mews1945 right away on the first night and they've been coming in steadily since then. The challenge will be open for another week and a half, here.

If I weren't expecting this September and October to be horribly stressful for me in real life I would totally sign up for the Finish-a-thon at [livejournal.com profile] multific: "The finish-a-thon is a ficathon, with all the ficathon-like things like deadlines and fellow volunteers to encourage you, but with this ficathon, you write your own ideas. But since part of the encouragement of a ficathon is writing things for other people, what we're going to do, is vote for which story ideas people should write." In the sign-ups you list at least three stories that you've been wanting to write or to finish, and later on there'll be a poll so that others can choose which one you're going to finish this fall. You decide whether voting is open just to other challenge participants or to everyone (including your f-list and others more likely to read your fic). Sign-ups end on August 15th, fics are due by October 24th.

There's a meme I saw last night in which you post every day in August about something that makes you happy. I didn't pick it up because I don't think I can handle posting every day, but today I decided that if I bend the rules a bit I should be okay, so my plan is to post about something that makes me happy for every day in August, and I won't feel bad if I miss a day here and there (because goodness knows I don't need guilt over the happiness meme). I am looking forward to this.

1. Yesterday I set up a delicious account! I am having so much fun with it! I save bookmarks of things I have written and things I have read and things I intend to read, and I can see whether other people have saved the same thing. I can search other people's bookmarks to find fics and other interesting things! I know this is very old hat to some people, and some are annoyed with the new interface, but for me it's all very exciting.

And a nice surprise for my ego: in the past I had read conversations where people said what fun it was to see their own fics bookmarked by others, to see what tags and notes had been used. And I thought, Eeyore-like, Ah well I am not famous enough to have that happen to me and anyway nobody in my fandoms uses delicious. However! Last night I saved my own Yuletide fics, and it turned out other people had already saved them! There were even some nice positive comments, especially on the long one I worked so hard on last November and December. Wow!

2. Lots of people have been reccing fics featuring original characters at [livejournal.com profile] lotr_fic_recs in the last week and a half, including a couple people who hadn't participated there before. Also I had a really nice e-mail last week from someone I didn't know requesting that we do a femslash challenge. Sometimes I get glum and think that nobody cares about that comm anymore so it is really awesome to know that other folks are paying attention. Plus, someone besides me wants femslash! Now I must go rec something myself and then put up the post closing the challenge. Yay!
