Hitcount meme and other AO3 things

I did this meme just over a year ago, and I thought it would be fun to come back and compare how it looks this year! My top ten fics by AO3 hitcounts:

1. Too Marvelous for Words, Merlin: Arthur/Merlin, 1585 hits
2. Put a Ribbon on It, Merlin: Gwen/Morgana, 893 hits
3. Lady in Waiting, Merlin: Gwen/Morgana and Gwen/knights, 889 hits
4. Dusk in the Market Square, Merlin: Merlin/Aredian, 876 hits
5. Don't Need Forgiving, Merlin: Arthur/Merlin, 804 hits
6. Talking Books and Burning Sticks (The Excellent Adventure Remix), Merlin: Gwen/Merlin and Arthur/Gwen/Merlin, 706 hits
7. Be So Bold, Merlin: Gwen/Morgana, 698 hits
8. Keep Your Head Down, Merlin: Merlin/Uther, 693 hits
9. I'll Be Yr Bird (Remix under the Dirt), Merlin: gennish Arthur/Merlin, 619 hits
10. Deep Breathless Black, Merlin: Merlin/Morgana/octopus, 607 hits

-The same fic is in first place as last year, and still far ahead of everything else. Sometimes I look at this and think, "I should write Arthur/Merlin porn so that more people would read my fics!" But I also love really the fact that there are femslash fics in places 2 and 3, and I would not have that if I wrote Arthur/Merlin porn all the time.
-All in one fandom omg!
-Last year three out of my top ten were fics from challenges hosted on the AO3, and this year only one of them is. I think a lot more people are using the AO3 for their regular reading now and not just going there when a big challenge like Yuletide or Remix happens. Of course, there's also the fact that those challenge fics were more recent then.
-Four of these are noncon or serious dubcon and a couple of the others have... I am not even sure how to group them together but problematic things related to sex happen. Posting that kind of thing can be super lonely and anxious-making, and I really like having AO3 hitcounts as a reminder that I'm not the only one who wants them.
-Sometimes when I look at my fics next to other people's fics that have many thousands of hits I get embarrassed or even sad, but mostly I just look at my fics together and the numbers make me happy.
-Some people get annoyed that their most popular work is not their best work. It is a frequent theme in writer-perspective posts at Fanfic Flamingo: something you wrote in a few hours gets more comments than something you sweated over for months! To this I say, eh. I think I wrote "Too Marvelous for Words" in two or three days. It was fun! I like it and almost everything else here, and I get why they're more popular than some other fics that are more personally meaningful to me.

The other day [personal profile] anatsuno pointed out a great Tumblr post by [personal profile] helens78 about the taboo against saying we like and our proud of our own work. Helens said it would be great if more authors would use the One of My Favorites tag on the AO3 and I agree, so tonight I went in and added it to four of my fics. I had decided to limit myself to five and I can't quite decide between two others. :) And none of those six fics overlap with the ten that are here, but that is okay.

So far only 135 works at the AO3 have that tag. Why not add it to a few of your stories, if you archive there? A lot of readers would like to know about them.

If you are a fan of the AO3 and can afford to do so, consider donating to the OTW! (I just accidentally typed OT3. Seriously, that comes to my fingers more easily than OTW or OTP. My OT3 is in fic #6 in the list above.)

Also also, the OTW is hosting an AO3 Tag Wrangling Open House from 19:00 to 21:00 UTC on April 22nd. In my timezone that is Sunday afternoon or an excellent time for fannish discussion, before frantic Sunday night catchup for the school week and frantic last-minute Remix edits. As much as I love the archive, I rebel a little every time I post a fic because the canonical Merlin character tags are ALL WRONG from my perspective. I am really curious as to why they've chosen to do things that way (and whether they might change it omg!) and also lots of other things about tags. Tags!
