Turning of the year: media consumption

Here is a post about some books and movies and TV and music!

Books For most of 2015 I was shooting to finish 50 books in the calendar year and I was pretty sure I would make it, up till about two weeks ago when I went to visit my family for the holidays and eh, pretty much stopped reading (except for a few Yuletide and Merlin Holidays fics). I ended up at 47. 47! Whatever, will shoot for 50 again in 2016.

Most of the books I read this year were connected to work so I won't talk about them here but I'll mention a few that I'd recommend:
-Are You My Mother? by Alison Bechdel (Not as good as Fun Home but good!)
-March books 1 and 2 by John Lewis (Civil Rights movement autobiography in graphic novel form)
-Funny Girl by Nick Hornby
-Selfish, Shallow, and Self-Absorbed: Sixteen Writers on the Decision Not to Have Kids, edited by Meghan Daum
-Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver
-Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel
-The Turner House by Angela Flournoy

I'm glad I kept a list of books I finished this year and will do that again next year.

Movies I'm also going to keep lists of movies I watch in the theater and movies I watch at home in 2016. I don't have much to say about Movies Watched in 2015 but I have a new year's resolution to watch more movies in the theater because watching movies in the theater is awesome!

I have watched four movies in the theater in the past two weeks! Star Wars, The Big Short, The Hunger Games, and Spotlight. I'm sure you don't need to be told that the new Star Wars movie is great! I also enjoyed The Big Short. It's true it's about a bunch of white dudes and Wall Street and I can see deciding that's not interesting but it was well made and entertaining. I didn't enjoy the last Hunger Games much -- remembered what a letdown and how very dark the third book had been and even considered leaving the theater in the middle (I was there by myself) but stuck it out and liked the end pretty well -- I felt it was clearer than in the book. Spotlight might not be on your radar but it is excellent and I recommend it like whoa.

TV Let's see, I still like TV a lot! Kept up with Brooklyn Nine-Nine and got way more into How to Get Away with Murder than I had been for the previous season. I thought The Good Wife and Orange is the New Black weren't as good as in previous seasons. House of Cards was good trashy fun and I think I like Quantico pretty well. I liked Sense8 (though it was a little violent for me) and loved Master of None. I watched Jessica Jones and liked it better than other Marvel TV shows (haven't gotten more than a few episodes into Agents of Shield, Agent Carter, or Daredevil) but not as much as most of my fannish friends seemed to. Was The Fall 2015? I liked the second season of The Fall better than the first (and not only because of Colin Morgan).

Some shows I will probably start watching soon are Jane the Virgin and Empire. Some shows I would like to watch but don't seem to have access to are Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Catastrophe, and Transparent.

Music I haven't listened to a lot of music in years, especially new music. I know it's very common for people to stop listening to new music as they get past their twenties but that seems like a real loss to me and I feel bad about it. I also feel like I miss out on a ton by not knowing much about hip hop, so I might try harder to listen to some of that this year. I am hindered a bit by the difficulty of listening to music on my phone. My phone works relatively well for podcasts and I listen to them A LOT. I listen to A LOT of podcasts. Something I could do more is to use podcasts to find out about new music. I subscribe to the NPR podcast All Songs Considered but don't actually listen to the episodes all that much. I could do that! And also listen to other stuff about specific kinds of music.

The one album that's been huge for me this year is the Hamilton cast album. To be honest it's probably the work that's meant the most to me in 2015, more than any books I read, TV or movies I watched. It's in my head all the time and it gives me all the feelings.
