I remembered it this morning while I was listening to [personal profile] adistantsun's lovely podfic of Still We Wait (a Harry Potter ficlet also by [personal profile] such_heights), and I decided to record it tonight.

Okay, so I participated in the Awesome Ladies Podfic Anthology II and it was (and continues to be) awesome!

Awesome Ladies Podfic Anthology II

Those links go to the post on [ profile] halfamoon, where you can see the list of readers and download a podbook or a zip file or browse by fandom and download individual MP3s. The total running time is over 7 and a half hours and there are 47 readers and 86 authors in 64 fandoms. Some of these readers are brand new to podfic and I believe this is the first podfic that's been made in some of the fandoms. I have been listening on my way to and from and around work and it's really a wonderful experience, to hear so many different voices and ways of reading. A lot of the fandoms are unfamiliar to me and some of the readers are people that I know on Twitter or whose names I've seen around, but I've never listened to them read before because I'm not into their regular fandoms. I love that there are pieces about motherhood and fighting and having sex and saving the world and all kinds of other things women do. It is making me very happy. [personal profile] fire_juggler has a really nice post about it and how listening to an anthology is different from listening to a long podfic.

I contributed seven pieces in seven different fandoms, several of which were new to me! They are each between 1 and 10 minutes long.

seven short podfics: Avatar, Doctor Who, Merlin, Northern Exposure, Pan's Labyrinth, Torchwood, X-Men )

Another awesome thing that happened was that [personal profile] fitz_y made a podfic of I Ache Myself for More a piece of Gwen/Morgana noncon that I wrote last year. I believe it's the only noncon piece among the 104 podlets in the anthology and both [personal profile] fitz_y and I feel a bit self-conscious about that, but, well, Guinevere is still awesome even when bad things are happening to her. I loved hearing Fitzy read this as well as a very porny Gwen/Morgana fic of her own, and there are several other Merlin podfics in the collection. In conclusion, yay ladies!!!

Wow, finishing and posting an old fic that I'd considered abandoned, what a nice feeling! I ought to do that more often. I was saying so to [ profile] claudia603 last night and she reminded me of the Frodo/Aragorn AU I started writing when I was visiting her in January of 2007. I got out the file and there's it's 11,000 words, a good chunk of which are porn! The thing is, she got me to write it by saying, Forget about posting, what's the thing you most want to read? And I think I've gotten a lot better about posting without fear since then, but that fic is no longer what I want to read, let alone revise and write and post. Still, 11,000 words!

In other news, [personal profile] glass_icarus just the prompts post for a new free-for-all fanworks fest over at [community profile] camelot_fleet. You should go check it out, leave some prompts and think about whether you want to make something. This fest was sort of my idea and I'm helping run it, so I would really like to see lots of people join in. I've always loved the atmosphere of [community profile] camelot_fleet parties and of Merlin fandom in general, but I'm not much good at finishing a fic in one day (heck, my last fic took me two years lol), which is sort of what you need to do in order to have anyone see it at a party or a lot of other commentfic meme type things. So the idea is here is, throw out lots of prompts and go crazy, but take a few weeks to finish. (If you need - if you want to write a fic in an hour, fantastic, but hold off on posting for a week to give us slowpokes time to catch up!) Here, have a banner:

-Posting is finally picking up for the spanking challenge at [ profile] kinkelot and today they started a new challenge, anonymity.

-I'm in the middle of reading Visiting Hunith by [ profile] rurounihime, a long Merlin/Arthur fic from Hunith's POV, and it's lovely.

-Bird of Passage by [ profile] emei, Gwen/everybody modern AU.

-Intersection by [personal profile] redsnake05 (also on LJ), awesome Toshiko gen fic.

-Memories of Bell by [ profile] mews1945, Sam Gamgee and his mother.

A couple weeks ago I was bragging to [ profile] rose71 that I'd gotten people to write awesome Merlin/Whoniverse crossovers three times, and tonight [ profile] netgirl_y2k wrote me another one!

Donna Noble, King of Camelot,
Because, really, wouldn't she do a better job? It just what I was hoping for, Donna being bossy and funny and capable and getting all our hapless Merlin characters' problems sorted out.

Previously written because I said it should be:
- Clarke's Law, also by [ profile] netgirl_y2k, Gwen/Morgana and Ten
- And Strange Roads by [ profile] themadlurker, also Gwen/Morgana and Ten
- Rebirth by [personal profile] such_heights, Merlin/Torchwood fusion starring Ianto

My own writing is less fun but it's coming along. Feeling listless about writing fic tonight but I need to do at least 100 words to keep up my record for [ profile] wrisomifu. I've had a really good time last night and today reading through some recent fics at [ profile] kinkme_merlin and feel bad that I still haven't written anything for that comm, so maybe I will give that a try tonight.

[ profile] camelotsolstice fics are due in a week. Mine is currently with its second beta. Hurray!

I wonder if the people writing for me for Solstice and Yuletide are feeling stressed. I hope not. It will be great, you guys! I can't wait to see what you do!

It makes me happy when people respond to things they don't like in fandom in positive ways like hosting a ficathon. It also makes me happy when people write gen fic about queer people. Thus, I'm doubly excited about queerlygen, a new community on Dreamwidth. If you're not doing the Dth thing, you can friend [ profile] queerlygen on LJ where I think at least mod announcement posts will be mirrored. Here's an excerpt from the mission statement by [ profile] fiercelydreamed:

For many of us who are queer, we're queer all the time. We're queer when we're grocery-shopping. We're trans when we're at the library. We're bisexual when we go on camping trips. We're questioning when we kick ass at kickball tournaments. We're intersex when we face off against our thesis defense committees. We're lesbians when we show up at our straight friends' houses after they've been brutally dumped by some jackass. And we're gay at (and quite possibly for) the dentist.

Drawing a line in the sand between "slash" and "gen" erases the fact that many of us live our daily lives aware of our identities and experiences as queer or genderqueer people. It's not something we only think about when we're falling in love, getting our hearts broken, or getting off.

At first I was a little confused seeing as how [ profile] lgbtfest already exists and its fics are mostly gen, but for one thing [ profile] lgbtfest is really popular and tends to fill up, so there's certainly room to have another similar thing at a different time of year. And also I think the focus will be slightly different, since lgbtfest fics tend to be about being lgbt (a lot of stories about characters coming to terms with their identity or coming out to family and friends), and maybe queerlygen will be about more of a variety of experiences including adventure plots, and both fests will be awesome.

And now I shall rec some queer gen fics that I've enjoyed, some of which I've recced here before:
  • One & Only by [ profile] baylorsr
    LotR, Frodo and Merry
This is maybe the first gay gen fic I ever read. [ profile] baylorsr got all kinds of ridiculous criticism for suggesting (in a PG-rated fic) that Frodo could be gay, but this is really a lovely sad Frodo and Merry friendship story. I love the idea that Merry is as good a hobbit as he is because of lessons he learned from Frodo when he was growing up.

  • Padding Around by [ profile] hanarobi
    Lotrips, Elijah and his mom
I think it was at the moot in March a group of us were talking about our first fics and [ profile] hanarobi said her first fic was one none of us had ever read, but I remembered this as one of the first Lotrips fics I'd read. I think there's a nice "this is a gay couple and not just a slashed couple" vibe in [ profile] hanarobi's Dom/Elijah wingfic series Wing Development too.

  • Out of the Cupboard Under the Stairs by [ profile] magnetic_pole
    Harry Potter, Harry
[ profile] schemingreader recced this fic about Harry coming out to his friends on [ profile] magnetic_pole's birthday a couple years ago and that was how I became aware of her, and now we are friends and I love reading her posts, so I know she is also excited about queerlygen. I have shown this fic to real life friends as an example of how cool fanfic can be and they agreed with me that it was charming and great.

  • Constructing Selves by [ profile] nevermindirah
    Torchwood, Toshiko
This was part of [ profile] lgbtfest 2008. I remember at the time I read it I was sort of flailing trying to figure out what I wanted from fandom and where I should be, and I wrote to Claudia that what I really wanted to read was genfic about lesbians of color "and LotR fandom is SO not doing that for me." OTOH it's distressing that this is the only fic about a woman or a PoC on my little list here. :( But anyway, this fic is great because it's so in character for Toshiko, that her reaction to realizing she isn't straight is to do research. :)

  • The Circle Game by [ profile] carolinecrane
    Saved!, Dean
This was a quiet little fic from last year's Yuletide that didn't get as much attention as it deserved, in my opinion. Dean realizing he's gay sets the events of Saved! in motion but then he's not around for most of the movie, having been sent off to Mercy House to be cured. I love that this fic puts him back in the center and keeps the movie's spirit of questioning received knowledge and of good people helping each other out even when they disagree.

  • And now, a self-rec!
Nine Steps in a Circle by me!
Little Miss Sunshine, Frank and Dwayne
This was my main fic for Yuletide last year. It's mostly about an uncle teaching his nephew how to write while both of them are thinking about what they want to do with their lives, and also the main character is gay.

Speaking of fic recs (including self-recs), we're doing fics set in Lothlórien this month at [ profile] lotr_fic_recs. There haven't been any recs yet and I'm a little embarrassed because the only one I can think of is a noncon with some questionable grammar and use of apostrophes. I will probably rec it because I think it's hot, but I should also try to think of something more respectable to go with it.

Hello, [ profile] springtime_gen and [ profile] purimgifts writers! I'm sorry for being a little late to post. I've been freaking out a little about having signed up for two challenging challenges at the same time and I had to run away for a bit. I am really looking forward to seeing what you come up with though, and I hope you're feeling good about the assignment you got.

Harry Potter person: You will have noticed that this is not my main fandom. In fact, this is the first time I've signed up specifically for an HP challenge, though I've ended up writing it a couple times in multifandom challenges. I find HP fandom kind of intimidating just because it's so huge, but I figured this could be a good chance to be a little more social in it. I don't think I have much to add to what I said in my request. I like girls (but also boys). I like fairly realistic fic (but also magic). I like different perspectives on the events of canon (but also Harry's perspective). I am pretty easy, really!

Purimgifts person: I had a great time with this challenge last year and I'm excited about doing it again. I requested a bunch of fandoms so I have a lot of things to say, though obviously optional details are optional… favorite characters and such )

Yay, fic exchanges! Thank you for signing up and for writing for me! I hope you both have a really good time with this.

LGBT fic!

sophinisba: Gwen looking sexy from Merlin season 2 promo pics (pippin cheeky by danachan)
Posting started at [ profile] lgbtfest on April 10th and will be continuing through May 27th. This is "a fest for fanfic that focuses on the experience of being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender."

I really like the way the posting is set up, similar to [ profile] choc_fic, it's spread out over a month or more, so there are tons of fics but it's not overwhelming like having them all show up on the same day. They just show up on my f-list every few hours, and even though a lot of them are for fandoms I don't know it makes me happy to see them there. You can see what's already been posted by paging back or use the tags to browse by fandom. I'm really enjoying the ones I've been reading! I remember some people worrying that a lot of these fics would be preachy or boring but the ones I've read have been nicely paced and had a lot of humor.

My two favorites of what I've read so far:
-Carbon, Pressure, Time by [ profile] lilacsigil. Firefly: Simon and Mal, PG. Prompt: "No one knows that Mal used to have woman parts, and no one needs to. But when he needs medical attention, Simon finds out, and he doesn't understand why it needs to be a secret. After all, everyone on the ship knows who's rutting whom."
-Constructing Selves by [ profile] nevermindirah. Torchwood: Toshiko, PG-13. Prompt: "When she doesn't understand something, Toshiko researches; and she doesn't understand how she could have fallen in love with Mary and still be attracted to men." I identify with Toshiko kind of a lot and this… yeah, it was really pretty awesome, and very funny.

Not part of that fest but with similar themes, a wonderful Harry Potter story and its remix:
-[ profile] kyuuuketsukirui wrote Team Q for this year's axial_tilt. It's a sweet little Dean/Seamus fic in which the boys (post-Hogwarts) create a comic book about queer mutant crime-fighting Quidditch players!
-The Quintessential Team Q (Antiphonal Intermezzo Remix) (author anonymous this week) [ETA: author is [ profile] melayneseahawk] is about a boy who becomes a fan of the comic and meets Dean and Seamus at a signing. It includes excerpts of the cheesy comic book writing and is adorable in every way.
sophinisba: Gwen looking sexy from Merlin season 2 promo pics (frodo flare by annwyn)
Today I wrote the second of my three assignments for [ profile] remixthedrabble and may or may not have finished the third – it's at 100 words but doesn't really feel complete. I'm also fiddling around with an extra ficlet for [ profile] purimgifts, though I'm not sure if that will come to anything. If I count the unfinished ones, between those two ficathons I've written in seven different fandoms, three of which I'd never written in before. So that has been a lot of fun, as has writing mostly about female characters.

But where is my Frodo writing mojo? How the heck am I going to write my fic for the Frolijah exchange (and get it betaed!) in the next nine days? I reread a few pages of LotR this afternoon and will read some more later to get some canon details and try to get into the spirit of things, but I really am anxious about this one, even though I have a great assignment.

Meanwhile, I've made my way through most of season three of Doctor Who with Netflix DVDs. It's probably my favorite season so far since I like both the Tenth Doctor and Martha so much, and yet lately whenever I'm watching it I find myself wishing I were watching Torchwood instead. Dude, I'm so sick of the Daleks! Doctor Who stories in general just don't interest me as much as the Torchwood ones. And it's not just the sex. I mean, yeah, the sex and kissing and such on Torchwood is awesome, but it's also the darkness of it. Not the gore (I wish Torchwood had less gore!), but the, I don't know, heart of darkness. This feeling not just that the characters' lives are incomplete but that they always will be, that they don't even know what they're looking for. I watched a lot of Torchwood last weekend and now I think I've seen almost all the episodes that have aired on BBC America, everything through "A Day in the Death" except for "Reset" (because there was a mistake with the recording information).
sophinisba: Gwen looking sexy from Merlin season 2 promo pics (frodo flare by annwyn)
I sure have been watching a lot of TV lately. 2nd season of the new Dr. Who, 1st season Torchwood, and a bit of 1st season Farscape on DVD, and new episodes of Lost and Supernatural. The ones I'm the most excited about right now are probably Torchwood because of all the same-sex kissing and Supernatural because of the look on Dean's face when he lies. (OMG Dean.) Both of these shows are often gorier than I would like, but…well, most of the time when there's something I don't want to see I just look at my knitting. :)

Another problem is trying to watch new episodes of SPN. The only TV in our apartment is the very small one in my roommate's bedroom that doesn't get cable. Across town, my parents have a cable package with hundreds of channels and DVR, but it doesn't include the CW. What's with that? (At least they do get BBC America.) New SPN episodes air Thursday nights but they don't become available on until the following Tuesday, and by that time the fandom is pretty much done discussing, so I feel all disconnected. Which is probably fine, since I don't know how much I can ever connect with that fandom when I'm not interested in the two of them having sex with each other. Still, I would like to see those new episodes when they are really new!
sophinisba: Gwen looking sexy from Merlin season 2 promo pics (frodo thinking by alchemilla)
FiveSix characters have been guessed on the meme I posted earlier today, and fivefour still need to be guessed. Join in?

And some free advice: if you're feeling nauseated and think relaxing with a good TV show could make you feel better, the Torchwood episode "Countrycide" is not the show you're looking for.
