I'm always late, but I'm now caught up with HP!

I finished reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince last week and have been reading HP fanfics and the meta with wild abandon, now that I no longer need to fear the spoilers. Not that I was very good at resisting the Snarry porn fic before that either, but hey, I can relax a little more now.

I'd had a few spoilers before reading the book, although, funny enough, they didn't come from the Internet, where I've found most fans to be pretty considerate about spoiler cuts and warnings (and where if I read that a character is dead I tend to assume that's just something somebody made up for a fanfic). Also, I had an incorrect spoiler: I was in Poland when the book came out last summer and accidentally read in a local newspaper that the Half-Blood Prince was Voldemort. (I don't think this was a problem with my Polish reading comprehension! I think the newspaper was wrong!) As I was reading the book I kept thinking, Man, it sure seems like it must be Snape! It'll be interesting to see how she turns things around to reveal that it's Voldemort! I wish I hadn't had the surprise ruined for me by reading that spoiler in Poland! :-D So yeah, in the end that was a sort of nice surprise to go along with the OMG SO HORRIBLE AND TRAUMATIC other surprise. I'd known Dumbledore was going to die, see, but, um, wasn't expecting it to happen in that way. *sniff*

I was pretty upset, let me tell you. But the next day I went on the Internet and read reactions by smarter readers than me, and since then I'm much more hopeful. Theories (and Spoilers) by [livejournal.com profile] garlandgraves (the one with the 33 pages of comments, heh) I found especially helpful and convincing, whereas some of the other explanations seemed more farfetched, like very wishful thinking on the part of my fellow Snape fans. Dumbledore's Man by [livejournal.com profile] emily_anne is also very good. Now that I've read what some hardcore Snape defenders have to say I'd love to what some of my friends think. Reactions? Predictions for book 7? I'm unspoilable now, you can say whatever you want! Ah, the freedom!

A fic rec, one I just read this morning (though it actually only has spoilers through OotP): A Fracture of the Mind's Eye by [livejournal.com profile] rushlight75. It's NC-17 Harry/various -- mind the warnings! If this were longer and starred Frodo it would be something approaching Ideal Fic Written for Sophinisba, I think. The ending is not that much of a resolution but that kind of thing doesn't bother me much. Apart from certain kinks we won't go into but which I get to read a lot of in HP fandom, this one's got one of my rarer kinks: Hero Who's Going Crazy/Is Afraid He's Going Crazy/Isn't Crazy But Knows All His Loved Ones Think He Is. Yum! I really like the way she writes Harry's emotions in all her fics, and the balance in this one between very bad hurt (physical and psychological omg!) and very comforting comfort (omg Lupin!) is just right for my tastes, though it may be low on the comfort for a lot of you. The writing style is just what I like too and features lots of regular, unpretentious words used correctly (woohoo!), and with correct punctuation! And the plot has ambiguity but is not confusing!

I always feel compelled to say this: I am so totally not switching fandoms on you! Hobbits are the characters I care about most and this is the community I'm happy in!
