Housekeeping

I know I've gone back and forth on this, but lately I've been wanting to be on Dreamwidth more, so tonight I subscribed or resubscribed to the Dreamwidth journals of a bunch of my friends who crosspost, and I set up a reading filter on LJ so I won't be seeing the duplicate posts all the time. If you'd just as soon we cut the connection on LJ just let me know, I'm fine either way. Also let me know if you're crossposting and we aren't friended on Dreamwidth yet, or if you're thinking about crossposting but find it confusing. (I'm confused too, but I will do my best to help.)

I'd sort of been holding off on doing this because I'd stopped using filters on LJ last year (it was too confusing for me with the crossposting) and I liked that feeling of just, if I have you friended it means I'm reading you. These days if I've stopped communicating with someone I usually unfriend them and I don't filter anyone out. So I did some of that tonight too, unfriended some people on LJ, and it's not that any of you/them have offended me or that I don't like you or whatever (some of you I really like!), just that we've moved apart. But if you want me to add you back just say so.

After I did that I imported my LJ friends list to Dreamwidth, so my LJ friends should always be able to comment on my Dreamwidth posts with OpenID.

Another thing I did...yesterday or the day before, was to set up my Dreamwidth OpenID so I can use it to comment on LJ. And I friended myself so I can comment on my own f-locked posts without being logged in to LJ. I think that's pretty neat, even though it's also kind of inconvenient because I can't see my friends' locked posts. (Although if any of you would like to give me that access, that would be swell.) I got this idea from [personal profile] zulu and it has a couple different purposes. One is to do some advertising for Dreamwidth and give people something to click on, the same way we do with the footer links on crossposts. Another is to show people that OpenID is actually pretty easy to use. (Not that I actually understand how it works at all, but I can use it, and I even get six icons!) And another it is to make Dreamwidth feel more like home for me.

I've also been adding some new people on Dreamwidth lately. *waves*

I feel weird trying to explain why I want to do this because, like, I know I have people on my f-list who have been reading tons of posts about how amazing and fabulous Dreamwidth is and don't want to hear about it anymore, and there are other people on my f-list who are barely aware of Dreamwidth at all...and also I'm lazy and don't feel like writing everything out. I'd like to link to something but I find a lot of the "Yay Dreamwidth!" posts snobbish and off-putting. Um, I agree with [personal profile] merryish's sentiments in LJ, content, Dreamwidth, moving, but unlike her I'm not planning to stop crossposting. Comments will still be open on both sites and I'm sure I'll continue to get more comments on LJ, but I just wanted to put out there again that I would like to be communicating with more people on Dreamwidth.

And now I have a question for people who understand the Dreamwidth importer better than I do. I imported my whole journal, including the comments, last July and I haven't done it since. I always felt a little weird about importing the comments and I wouldn't want to do that again, but I'd like to know what would happen now if I imported the posts again. Will it create duplicate posts? Occasionally I'll edit just the LJ side of a post. Does that affect whether the importer creates duplicates?

There's really just one post I want to import and that is my fic index. I go back and edit that from time to time, and I decided last year that I would only edit the LJ version because at the time I thought coding usernames on Dreamwidth was annoying. But I've since gotten used to that and I'd like to be able to link to the post on Dreamwidth and have it automatically edit the LJ one...but not if it's going to be a mess with all the other posts.

Back in 2007 I used some other program (LJSec?) to move my posts from LJ to IJ. Is that still around? Or was there some other program you can use with Macs, to import just one post at a time? Copying and pasting won't work because the usernames are different.
