Books!

It's a Wednesday and I've been less busy at work this past week! I have been reading books!

I finished a book I mentioned in my last books post, Las malas by Camila Sosa Villada. In other Spanish-language reading I tore through Fe en disfraz by the Puerto Rican writer Mayra Santos-Febres and am currently engrossed in Roza, tumba, quema, about to come out in translation as Slash and Burn, by the Salvadoran writer Claudia Hernández. Three recs!

I went back and finished The Vegetarian by Han Kang. Still not really my thing but I liked the last third, which had a female character's POV, better than the two other main parts.

I got the audiobook of Michelle Obama's Becoming out from the library again. I had stopped listening because the last third of that one, about being First Lady, was less interesting than the two previous parts about growing up and about making a family. Also because I'd been busy listening to political podcasts before the election, and also Michelle Obama had her own podcast and it was all a little too much to listen to. But there wasn't a lot of news this past weekend with the holiday, and I went back and finished it and it was still pretty good.

I had to return Pachinko by Min Jin Lee but look forward to reading more of it soon. I'm about two thirds of the way through Leave the World Behind by Rumaan Alam but less into it than I thought I would be. Will the library take it back while I'm sleeping or will they let me keep it for another three weeks? I'm not sure.

I checked out The Pull of the Stars by Emma Donoghue, which I'd read a bit of a couple months back. It's about a nurse in Dublin during the flu pandemic of 1918-19.

I also checked out but haven't yet started reading Crooked Hallelujah by the Cherokee writer Kelli Jo Ford, which I found out about through the delightful NPR Book Concierge, which came out yesterday.
