Lotrips AU recs and question about feedback
I've seen a few of my hobbit-lovin' LJ friends mention that, while for various reasons they prefer not to read slash fiction about the real-life actors who made The Lord of the Rings, they do enjoy some LOTRIPS AU (or is it AR, and what's the difference anyway?), stories about more or less original characters played by our lovely boys and sharing names with them, but usually taking place in exotic settings such as, say, Ancient Egypt or outer space. *waves to
trianne*
A few recs for you ladies, and anyone else who's interested, of stories by
airgiodslv and
elfellon111, two very different but both excellent authors you may not have come in contact with since they don't write about hobbits.
airgiodslv, a.k.a. Cassandra, a.k.a. Jen, has several lengthy, meaty, plotful AU fics among the many jewels on her website, Redefinition. I have particularly enjoyed Possession, taking place in Europe several centuries back and starring (vampire!) Elijah, Dom, Orlando, and (vampire!) Viggo; and Futures Possible, about Billy, Dom, and David Wenham as guys on a spaceship several centuries hence who discover a mysterious and beautiful Elijah on a seemingly uninhabited planet. Both of these are stunningly well constructed stories with complete, believable universes and all the subtlety she always puts into her characterizations and relationships. Complex characters and relationships, I should say, so the question of consent isn't always clear-cut in her fics, and you're not guaranteed a happy ending.
airgiodslv wrote a short snippet of a sequel to Futures Possible not long ago: Disfunctional should not be read before the main fic as it spoils the ending. Lately she's been writing mostly HP fic, and of course she should do whatever makes her happy (sob!), but I can't help holding out some hope that if we all besiege her with praise for her fascinating AU Elijah and company we can make her forget all about Harry and Draco. (Er, and you might also consider joining the faction encouraging her to write Firefly fic; check out the NC-17 River/Inara drabble in this thread.)
To celebrate her birthday in November
elfellon111 gifted her f-list with a series of requested ficlets and fics culminating in the first chapter of Eyes of Wonder, a Dom/Elijah AU set in Ancient Greece! The second chapter went up yesterday and it appears that she has more lovely angsty (but also hot) Greek love on the way. Like all of Elfie's work, this story is written not only with great skill but with an obvious love for the characters that makes it a joy to read. This could be a very nice introduction to the wonderful genre that is Elijah-as-slave for those of you who, like Elfie, don't like to read or write non-con. Not that I... er... Ahem.
Elfie's journal is friend-locked because of some trouble she's had with trolls, but there's a place for you to comment and she will almost certainly let you in if you ask nicely. She's a wonderfully friendly and pleasant person and her journal is a great place for fics, picspams of Elijah and sometimes Dom, and good conversations with other fans.
Okay, and, a quick question about LJ and fanfic customs. If you come across a fic that was posted, say, a year and a half ago but that you've never read before, and that you think is terrific and deserves feedback, do you give it? Would you leave a comment on that fic, send an e-mail, mention it in a comment to a more recent post that the author's more likely to notice, or just let it go?
