Stuart Davis, soundtrack of (parts of) my fandom
I went out with a couple friends last night (actually, the very same open-minded geeks with whom I watched Star Wars last week) to see singer-songwriter Stuart Davis, and I tonight I really feel the need to praise him highly and encourage others to check out his music. I think a lot of his songs would especially appeal to fans of RPS and darkfic. There is a significant amount of kink in the lyrics, sometimes treated with humor, sometimes with a movingly spiritual perspective, sometimes both, always with complete honesty. The bio on his webpage says his songs are about "God, sex, and life and death," although I think I remember hearing him say that he writes about "God, sex, death, and alien abductions." I like that he can put all of these topics into one song and make it work, and make it beautiful. His singing and guitar playing are also awe-inspiring.
You can listen to several of his songs for free at his website. Of these, my friend B. and I are especially fond of "Savoring Samsara", which Stuart was kind enough to play at our request last night. B. played an MP3 of this song for me in her apartment a few months ago, minutes after I told her I was into slash, and I was sure I heard him singing "spilling semen into fandoms". Ah, no, she explained, "I'm pretty sure it's 'phantoms'." Still.
And the free MP3 of "Nothing In Between" doesn't seem to work, but you can read the lyrics here or buy it for a dollar here. (And keep in mind that here is an independent musician, too interesting to be played on the radio, and it would be nice to support him, and a dollar isn't very much for something so gorgeous.) This is the song I most associate with
The best thing to do though is to go to a show of his. There's just an energy there and a wonderful relationship with the audience that I miss on his studio albums. (16 Nudes is a fine live album, recorded here in Minneapolis.) He's playing in Boulder, Colorado, this Saturday night, and you can find out about other upcoming shows on the website.
Oh, and did I mention that he's tall and skinny and cute as hell and, at the last show B. and I went to, kissed his male drummer on stage and let the guy play with his nipple during a song? Slash fans, I'm serious, go listen now.

Stuart
