I mean, I was reading a lot of lotrips before, so it's not like I was some innocent young thing who'd never read any explicit fic, but I'm dealing with a whole new kind of guilt over the age thing here.
Mmmm. I've read lots of lotrips fics, too. Well, you know. However, I've never experienced anything like HP fic. It's not to say that it's better. Well. I think the sheer size of the fandom produces fics en masse. The things I've read -- and I'm not speaking in particular of dark, button pressing fics, just the fics in general -- have immensely impressed me.
It seems to me (and I don't think I'll get lynched by the hobbit people for saying this, 'cause who looks at a post that's more than two days old?)... It seems to me that there is a lot less fear in that fandom, or at least among people who write that pairing. I guess with the fandom being so huge it makes it easier for fans, especially writers, to find a community of like-minded people. In these parts I think there are more people saying "That's anachronism!" or "That looks to me like pedophilia and pedophilia is Wrong!" or "You don't understand Tolkien at all!", and that makes a lot of writers afraid to push the envelope in the way that the Snarry girls do as a matter of course. They really don't seem to worry as much about offending anyone, and that makes the reading enjoyable for me, though I don't know anything about what those writers are like to interact with.
That's an interesting point. I haven't ventured much beyond reading Snarry fics, but I would say that you're probably right in re to the fearlessness factor. I think, too, that because HP fandom is sooooo huge (even compared to LOTR -- FPS and RPS included), a reader can have a very diverse experience. Not that a person can't get that in LOTR, mind you. As far as whether people will analyze this or that with HP fic -- it does happen. There's a lot of academic discussion that takes place in that fandom, I'm sure equal in par to discussion that surrounds LOTR fanfic.
I will say, without comparing it to other fandoms, that the writers I've encountered in HP fic have been impressively creative, sophisticated, and just amazing. Truly. Not just in their fearlessness, but how they weave stories, invent and re-invent aspects of the wizarding world. And the characterizations... Really wonderful. And since I've almost only read Snarry fics, I particularly enjoy how authors go beyond writing "fillers" -- like missing scenes -- but really recreate worlds altogether. I bow to the HP fic writers, as someone who aspires not only to be a better writer of fanfic, but just to be a better writer generally. I'm gushing, I know. I've just never, in any one fandom, encountered so much talent. (And I've been reading fanfiction for years and in different fandoms. Quite a "well-read" fanfiction reader, I am.) I'm saying all this mainly to pay respect to the writers who've been such inspration for me. And who've provided me with so much enjoyable reading.
And as for interacting with HP writers -- those that I have interacted with, I've found incredibly warm and welcoming. And, of course, I've almost exclusively read only Harry/Snape fics, so my opinion is reserved for those who write this pairing. (Although, I'm sure writers of other pairings are lovely people as well.)
I am really terribly impressed as well. I'm about two thirds of the way through In Between Days now, by the way, and really loving it, still have NO IDEA how things are going to turn out.
GUH! GUH! GUH!! That third one... oh. Am so dead. So. Dead.
In Between Days is definitely in my Top Ten. It's not everyone's cuppa... but for me... Fantastic. Close to perfect. That story immediately made atrata one of my favorite writers.
Aragorn is stern(!), but this is a whole other level of OMG I CAN'T TELL WHETHER HE CARES ABOUT ME OR WHETHER HE'S GONNA RAPE ME OR WHETHER HE'S GONNA HAND ME OVER TO THE DARK LORD. It's exciting as hell.
Yep, I really do like the interactions between them in the movie OMG I am a pervert I am such a pervert pervert pervert... and I did think long ago that maybe I'd enjoy such fanfic.
But eh, it wasn't happening for me. Ha, and many of the fics---get this---were pregnant Snape!!!
It helps if you imagine Elijah playing Harry. And sometimes in my head he actually looks extra Frodo-like, with long lashes and stuff. Sometimes it's Dan though. The image shifts around a lot in my mind. Alan Rickman definitely does not need to be replaced.
I used to be totally resentful of the Harry Potter people! I would get nervous any time an author I liked mentioned that she'd read a HP fic! I would glare and go around saying "How can anyone possibly care about those characters when they could be reading about hobbits?!"
I keep getting confused. Like, I'm in the middle of GoF and also In Between Days, and I'll open up the book and be all disoriented because I thought we were in the forest and suddenly we're back at Hogwarts again.
Ah, there is that danger. I'm only up to the 2nd book right now. Since I'm not really into fics featuring an 11-year-old Harry, the mix-ups aren't the issue they would be with Goblet of Fire.
Have you read any fics featuring an older Harry? Like, graduated older? I've read a few recently and they are just as hot in my mind. Check out "Dumbledore's Folly" by DementorDelta here: http://archive.skyehawke.com/story.php?no=8151&chapter=1
Love it! And it might help with the age guilt issue, too....
I haven't read that (I'm just starting out), and I thank you for the link. I'm in the middle of several right now, including Telanu's Tea Series, and he's still a teenager where I am in that but I think he's going to be an adult later in the fic, yes? I did read one where he was 11 and it freaked me out a little, and I took a break from the Snarry for a little while after that, but I couldn't stay away for very long.
Heh. I haven't finished all the books either, which is why I feel a little er...reluctant to read fan fic yet. It's very confusing to know how to avoid spoilers, and what is "canon" and what is fanon. :-D Even in LOTR that can confuse me after a time, and I like to have the two separated in my mind...
I was just reading some Harry/Cedric interaction in GoF this evening and thinking of you.
But yeah, some people warn for spoilers and some people don't at all. I was just dipping my toes in it the last couple weeks and trying to avoid them, but I read a bunch of spoilers this morning and I've pretty much given up now.
But I NEED them Hobbits!!!! Or rather I need Elijah...
That's what I used to say. But there was the Harry angst in the GoF movie and then geniusartist did some crossover crack, and then I needed to see some more, and now, yeah.
so can he play Harry... maybe that would work... oh dear...
Nice thing about fanfic, Harry can be played by whoever you want. For me it's usually Dan, but sometimes it shifts into Elijah or occasionally someone else. It's not a huge deal, I mean, I'm still about the hobbits first and foremost.

There's plot.
And lots of porn.
And angst.
And more porn.
