Two LotR ficlets

I wrote these two Merry ficlets from prompts at [livejournal.com profile] writing_game Week 61. I'm a little stuck with the challenge at the moment so if you have any ideas for LotR things I can do with any of the prompts at the DS9 table on that post let me know. :)

Title: I Shall Certainly Come
Pairing: Frodo/Merry
Rating: PG
Warnings: none
Words: 100
A/N: from the prompt "You Are Cordially Invited..."

Upon reading the invitation Merry wished, not for the first time, that his cousins didn't share a birthday. He wrote back at once to say, "My dear Frodo, thank you, I cannot wait to see you again," but his mother caught the note and tore it up, including Merry's name on the more polite letter addressed from the Brandybucks to both Bagginses instead.

The disappearing trick took even more away from what should have been Frodo's celebration, Frodo's night. Only after a gross of nosey hobbits had said goodnight did Merry finally have his Frodo to himself.

"When I come of age," he said as they walked arm in arm up the Hill, "I'll tell the rest of them to shove it. I shall only invite you."

"Of course you shall." Frodo's voice was amused and tired, and his smile was sad in the moonlight. Merry felt foolish, because Frodo was a grown-up now and would care about relations and responsibilities, and when his time came Merry would have to do the same. But then Frodo stopped on the path and kissed Merry on the lips, and his smile was real when he said, "And I shall most certainly come."

Title: A True Friend
Fandom: Lord of the Rings
Characters: Merry, Gandalf, Frodo
Rating: G
Warnings: none
Words: 100
A/N: from the prompt "Underhanded".

As a child Merry didn't like loud noises, but he cheered for Gandalf's fireworks because Frodo did, and Merry wanted to like the things Frodo liked.

Merry didn't talk about Bilbo's ring because he knew Frodo liked thinking his secret was safe.

Merry turned a faithful servant into a spy. Merry moved Frodo's things halfway across the Shire to keep up the pretense of Crickhollow for another two days. Merry lied to Pippin's parents and his own. He lied to Frodo's face.

At Rivendell Gandalf narrowed his eyes, puffed on his pipe, and said, "We could use one like you."

Merry's love and loyalty for Frodo really shine through in these lovely snippets.

I LOVE FRODO AND MERRY AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP SO MUCH!!!!! I wish you were writing in LOTR more usual-like because you do these two so well! *feels happily nostalgic*

Oh how I love this! Merry would have done just about anything for Frodo.

Oh, this shot me through with a hot sweet spike of nostalgia. THIS is the Merry I strove to write, and the Frodo/Merry I always envisioned. These are both gorgeous.

I love these. Frodo's devotion to Frodo is such a powerful force, and these are perfect illustrations of that.

Oops, I screwed up. I meant Sam's devotion to Frodo. Doh.

I love them both but the second one is my favorite. It shows Merry's loyalty and his ability to plan ahead in a time of urgency all in one go. I also think they both show Merry's independent side. So much said in a few words. Bravo!
