Notes: Written for the "Warmth" prompt at writing_game week 61 and browngirl's request for hobbits in the Shire during the Troubles.



"Pop and me used to help out with the stores down here," Azalea whispered in Pansy's ear, "since we lived so close. Most of the work was after harvest but I remember I came down one day in July, and I thought I might lay down and die here. The air didn't move at all. Felt like I was baking in an underground oven."

"That must have been glorious," Pansy said, and when she laughed her breath pleasantly warm on Azalea's cheek, if only for a moment.

They were almost sure it was November. They were absolutely sure today was colder than yesterday. They were not at all sure how many more days they could take. But then again, they didn't have any choice. So in the dark they traded stories of hot summer days and held each other tight, and promised they wouldn't let go until they were free.

Oh! Oh, I haven't seen a new Troubles fic like this in a very long time! Just so heartbreaking to think of the poor hobbits in the Lockholes, but so lovely to see how they take care of one another.

Thanks for reading! browngirl actually mentioned this quite a few weeks ago and it took me a while to manage it. But I'm like you, I love reading about hobbits helped each other get through those times.

Stories of the Troubles in the Shire are difficult for me to read. I hate to think of the hobbits at the mercy of the ruffians and Saruman. But there's the breath of hope and the iron of endurance in this that made them outlast the Troubles.
