TVs

B. and I watch some TV most nights. We don't have exactly the same tastes and I more often tend to say "Ugh why do we have to watch so much TV can't we do something meaningful like read books or make art" but then I fritter time away on Twitter and Words With Friends. We tend to like to watch an episode of a sitcom around dinner and then a drama later in the evening. Another issue is that I get up a little earlier than she does, and I sometimes fall asleep during the drama, and/or get freaked out because most of the dramas we watch have murders in them. Often she pleads to watch The Americans and I recognize that The Americans is a great show but that doesn't mean I want to watch it before bed any given night. Another issue is that these days a lot of the good shows vary in genre so much from episode to episode. We have enjoyed episode of Atlanta and Fleabag and appreciate that they're good shows, but some episodes are so unexpectedly disturbing that we're never sure whether it's a good idea to put them on, and thus we haven't gotten very far with them.

Maybe two weeks ago we started watching Schitt's Creek because my Twitter feed was talking about it so much. Lots of people said it gets better after the first season, a lot of which is very cringey, but we decided to start at the beginning and as of last night we have survived the first season and enjoyed significant parts of it. To be honest I was a little upset after I watched the first episode and finally Googled David and Patrick and realized all this fuss was about another two white guys, but at this point I love David and I'll probably come to love Patrick once he shows up, it's cool. Like I said on Twitter, I didn't really like the first five MCU movies I saw either and yet here we are.

Also last night we finished season 4 of The Americans. I guess I don't have much to say about this. It is super great and has wonderful characters and is often disturbing and I don't feel fannish about it. It's a different kind of love.

On my own I watched the Mexican Netflix show La Casa de las Flores, which I do think has a ton of potential for fanworks and fannishness, or would if it were in English, though of course part of what's fun about it is the Spanish, particularly as spoken by Paulina.

Some other shows we've watched together in the last year are Brooklyn Nine-Nine, The Good Place, Drunk History, and Vera (laughs at dinner, murder before bedtime idek).

ETA also Shrill and Russian Doll.

The OA is very good, very atmospheric. Also Dead To Me is hilarious, creepy and spot on. I loved Chernobyl, I planned not to watch it so of course did the opposite. I watched a little of Schitt’s Creek and keep meaning to get back to it.

That video has piqued my interest in La Casa de las Flores!

I love David from Schitt's Creek (that face! those eyebrows!), and adore B99 and The Good Place.

Dramas I can think of which aren't too intense or murder focused: Burden of Truth, Queen Sugar, Shadowhunters, Charmed, The Gifted, Proven Innocent (though the plot revolves around a past murder).

I've written down The Americans as a rec from someone else that I might enjoy watching it, I have no idea what it is about though!

Shows I've watched recently are Dead to Me! (love loved it) I started to watch The Good Place and liked it, but I got distracted by other things. I have watched Slasher (kind of a play on old school slasher movies) but I don't really like it, it's too ... I don't even know. Too dark in an unnecessarily exploitive kind of way. I recently started watching a silly show called Younger, but I seem to have totally lost interest in it after leaving for nearly a week, never got back into it.

I've heard Brooklyn Nine Nine is good. I should check that out.

I have trouble with murder shows too. It just gets to be too much. Do you like cartoons?

I've enjoyed cartoons like Hilda and the Dragon Prince. I watch all kinds of things though! I like dramas and action/adventure best. I have pretty much negative interest in Killing Eve or other things that focus on serial killers as the main characters. The best thing I've watched lately is The Expanse, which i got out from the library.
