Patil twins

Does anyone feel like talking about Padma and Parvati Patil from the Harry Potter books? I've signed up to write a fic about them and I'm still at the beginning stages. I have a few ideas but I'd love some help working them out in e-mail or chat.

Possibly stupid thought from someone who has not read much of the books:

Are there Indian magical schools, and could they have attended those?
How does the Wixarding world generally conceptualize immigration/emigration?

I wish I had some good personality-specific questions, but having not read the books I only know Padma and Parvati Patil from their brief appearances in the movies. *makes small frustrated noise*

My guess is that the Patil twins are actually British but just ethnically Indian? (Is that right, Sophie?) but I love the idea of an Indian magical school!

I don't know that the books actually specify, but they've been at Hogwarts the whole time and I had thought they were probably born in England. I might do something about having their parents be from India though. I do not know!

Yeah, I should think about this more, and whether wizards' reasons for moving to England would be the same as non-magical Indians or Chinese people or Jamaicans. It's just not addressed in the books at all, even though there are these mentions of wizarding schools and quidditch teams from other countries. Maybe I will write about Padma going to India after she finishes school after all.

There really isn't too much of their personality in the books either, at least as far as I can remember. (It's also true I didn't pay much attention to them, or, um, to the books in general, until recently.) I'll probably do something with the fact that Parvati was sorted into Gryffindor and Padma Ravenclaw.

I think of them as having been born in England but their parents might be from India. The prompt I have to write is "separation after years apart" and I'm still trying to decide what will have caused them to stay apart for so long. One thing I've considered is Padma having gone to India and Parvati stayed in England, but I don't know, that almost feels too easy.

I think there must be magical schools in India though! Another thing I've thought about (though it probably won't go into this fic) is that in India they'd have completely different ideas about the relationship between wizards and Muggles, like the wizards wouldn't try to hide their magic because everybody would know about it. :)

I have nothing to say about them except that they were funny in Goblet when they were truly bored by Ron and Harry being lame at that dance. :-)

Yes, I will probably say something in the fic about the ball and how lame Harry and Ron were. I'm pretty sure that's the Patil twins' most extended appearance in canon. They sure did look pretty in the movie!

I also figured that Padma and Parvati were born in Britain but their parents or grandparents came from India. I think it's really interesting that one was sorted into Gryffindor and the other into Ravenclaw. Perhaps one parent belonged to Gryffindor , and the other to Ravenclaw?

I also think it's interesting that in the movie they're clearly fraternal twins. I believe the actors who play Fred and George are fraternal twins too, but I still can't tell them apart, lol :)

The girls who play them in the movies aren't even related. I guess the director said it was more important to him that they could act than that they be identical. But then I think it's interesting that the movie gets rid of the differences between them in other ways, like having them both be from Gryffindor and have them wear the same dress at the ball.

I'm definitely interested in the Gryffindor/Ravenclaw thing. I hadn't thought of their parents being from both houses though. Maybe I'd been imagining that their parents came from India as adults, but how fascinating if they'd gone to school in the Marauders' era!

Oh yeah, I figured that they weren't related. I just meant that, it clearly wasn't a priority or else I'm sure they could have found twins of Indian descent! Now I wonder if there's any mention of them being identical twins in the book. Imagine the fun they could have if they were...sneaking off into each other's houses :)

I've been reading some Marauder-era fics this week, and in one story there's a reference to a Patil...I can't remember which story that's in at the moment, though. If I ever do come across it again, I'll send you the link.

I've been really interested in reading HP fic lately too, though I've been mainly reading Remus- and Sirius-centric fics (specifically from the Marauder era). I'm really fascinated by that time, and by those characters, but I don't have any ideas for writing stories of my own (and that goes for hobbits too. I've had no inclination or inspiration to write at all lately).
