Dear Yuletide Writer

So, I'm in a really good mood. I got my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide assignment this morning and have been lurking around my recipient's journal, and I think this request is a perfect match for me and what I want to write. I'm also very squeeful about the idea of someone writing something for me.

Dear Yuletide writer,

Eeee, Yuletide! Thank you for signing up to write in one of my fandoms! I can't wait to see what you come up with! This is the first year I've participated and I'm really, really excited. I hope I will not be very difficult to write for. I tried to offer several ideas for each fandom, but please don't feel limited to those. They were more examples of the kind of things on my mind than specific requests. If you are inspired to do something else that doesn't jive with anything I've mentioned, please go with that! I really want you to write something you feel passionate about and I'm sure I'll love what you do.

I won't be repeating those requests here because they overlap some with the things I offered to write and I'm trying to be sneaky and not reveal those. This letter is more to tell a little about myself and the things I like to read in general.

I read and write mostly gen and slash, but I like het and femslash too. Slash is usually the thing that turns me on the most, but that's not necessarily what I'm looking for in this exchange and with these fandoms. In the fandoms where I named several characters, it's not because I'm looking to read about those characters having sex with each other (and you only need to include one of them, not all). Maybe you can find a way to make it work and that would be great, but a good honest conversation, especially if they're getting at things that are important to them but that they haven't talked about much, is more what I have in mind. The exception here is the movie set in the '90s – I could totally go for some explicit sex in that one, but I won't be disappointed if it's not there either. (I should say that I'm requesting based on that movie – I haven't read the book.)

I like it when a character's cultural background is acknowledged in the fic and part of the way they think about things. I like reading about interactions between people of different cultures, races, nationalities, social classes, etc. It won't necessarily be relevant for these fandoms, but I'll mention that some parts of the world I've spent time in and am especially interested in are Latin America and Eastern Europe (specifically, Argentina, Brazil, Romania, and Poland).

I'm really moved (especially in the fandom with the historical setting and the one set in the future) by the way these characters care for each other as individuals and as human beings despite the pressure either to save themselves or to consider a political cause to be more important. I'd also be interested to read about the characters who don't help each other, to understand their motivation/justification for sacrificing or betraying another person.

Some kinks – again, these probably won't apply to these particular fandoms, but in case you're wondering: I have a gen kink for my hero being crazy or thinking s/he's crazy or having everyone else think s/he's crazy. In slash fics, I kink for bdsm and D/s. I like fantastical stories about captivity and sexual slavery, especially when my favorite male character is the captive and is psychologically messed up because of it. (This is harder for me to take with female characters.) On the other hand, in this exchange, I've only requested sex in one fandom, and that character says canon that he doesn't do "that stuff". Being true to the characters is way more important than getting at my kinks!

Something else I didn't mention in my requests is that I love hurt/comfort fic. There is a lot of violence in most of these fandoms, and having someone tended to after a beating or a bullet wound could make me really happy. As I'm sure you've figured out by now, you shouldn't feel any pressure to write a happy fic or a holiday-themed fic just because this is for a holiday exchange. As I said in one of the requests, I could really enjoy something brutal but also something hopeful and tender, or both. Characters helping each other through a difficult situation = win!

If you'd like to find out more about me you should be able to find your way around my LJ pretty well using the tags. I have a Yuletide tag that includes a couple of recs. My own fic is listed here. As you can see, it's mostly about hobbits, but I've dabbled in a few other fandoms too. Things I've noticed myself writing a lot, so I suppose they are also kinks: characters not saying everything they're thinking because it would make them too vulnerable; characters who quarrel because they love each other too much to sit back and watch the other do something stupid; characters who think no one else can understand their problems finding out that someone does.

[ETA: I did some editing of my tags tonight to make a few more fandoms easier to find and I opened up a couple posts that had previously been locked. The movies tag might also possibly be relevant.]

I also have a recs tag, though I don't rec as often as I should. Here are some links to stories that have been written for me: my birthday this year, my birthday last year; Frodo and Merry as Holmes and Watson, Lotrips h/c; remixes of my fics in the challenges A Conspiracy (hobbits), Remix Redux (hobbits), Remix: The Drabble (hobbits, Firefly, and Pan's Labyrinth), and Fandom Mashup (The Faculty).

I hope that last list gives you an idea that there really is a lot of variety in the fics I read and enjoy. This will be great. Your fic will be great. I hope you have a really good writing experience. Thanks so much for doing this!

-Sophie

It'll be funny if after all that rambling and linking it turns out the person assigned to me is someone who already knows me like [livejournal.com profile] danachan or [livejournal.com profile] baranduin! :D
