Remix Redux VI
Sign-ups are open for
remixredux08! You can read through the rules (a few things have changed since last year) here and then fill out the sign-up form, then come back here and let me know that you're participating so I'll know I have some friends involved. Sign-ups are open until this Saturday, February 23rd. Assignments will go out by March 1st and fics will be due by April 12th.
To participate one needs to have written at least five stories of at least 500 words each in at least one of a list of qualifying fandoms, based on who's participated in past years (LotR counts!).
I think remixes are so cool! After all, most of us write the kinds of stories we like to read, and having our fics remixed means we get a new perspective on our own ideas and our favorite characters. I enjoy the writing part of it a lot too. It's writing fanfic of someone else's fanfic, and I really love the idea of treating another fan's work that way. I like writing for a specific person and putting in little details that you know they will appreciate even if most other readers won't notice them. And as with other anonymous challenges, I think it's fun to stalk someone else's journal secretly gathering information on things they will enjoy.
I had a challenging time with
remix_redux last year because I got assigned to someone based on our sharing LotR fandom, but all her stories were about Men rather than hobbits. That's part of the reason Dana and I ran
a_conspiracy last summer, and we had a really good time with that. We are still hoping to run it again this coming summer.
I haven't signed up for
remixredux08 yet and I'm hesitating for a couple of reasons. One is that I'm signed up for more challenges than I should be right now (four of them due in late February and March). Another is concern that not many of the people I know will be playing, and that could make it a little lonely.
Plus, there are a few things I should take care of first. I need to repost my Yuletide fics and some others to this journal and then update and possibly reorganize my fic index.
I've also been thinking about reorganizing my tags so that they show up in a better order. If I only had a few tags then it wouldn't matter that they weren't categorized, but I keep adding more and the order is so random! So I would change the "firefly" tag to "fandom: firefly". I would change the "gen fic" tag to "fic: gen". I would change the "homecoming" tag to "fic: faculty: homecoming".
The problem with redoing my tags is that in a bunch of places I've used links to them so if I redo them I'll have to go in and change all those links. Like a while ago I was trying to make my LJ more like a fic archive and one of the things I did was to put these links at the bottom of each chapter of a multi-part story: a link to the next chapter, a link to the series tag, and a link to the fic index. So if I changed the tag of the series, I'd have to go back and edit all those links in many different entries. :/ On the other hand, retagging can be relaxing and pleasant in its own way, as Claudia and I have discussed. Sort of like knitting – one feels like one's accomplishing something but it doesn't take a whole lot of creativity or thought.
Okay, and then thinking again about the sign-ups and seeing that I only qualify in the same two fandoms (LotR and Faculty, and Faculty isn't one of their core qualifying fandoms because its fans haven't done much remixing in the past) that I did last year makes me feel like a bit of a slacker. Like for all this disparateness and the many, many hours I've spent watching fandom's favorite TV shows this last year I still haven't done enough writing to make myself more remixable. Now, this isn't really fair because, for example, I certainly didn't slack off on Yuletide. So I shouldn't feel bad.
Still! I feel like I ought to try more. I've got four Lost fics of at least 500 words and a couple other drabbles about different characters so that I wouldn't feel really sorry for someone who got assigned to me on that basis. (I would feel bad for someone who got assigned to remix my Harry Potter fics, so it's just as well that I don't quite have enough of them.) Now, 500 words is not very many. Couldn't I write one more by Saturday? Eh, but do I really really want to? I don't have any unfinished Lost fics on my hard drive or even any bunnies to speak of, just a vague idea that someday I ought to write one with a plot. :) I never really know what's going on on that show anyway, so it's hard to imagine what's going on off-screen. And Lost isn't one of the core fandoms on the list, so it wouldn't make much difference anyway.
So I'll probably just sign up with the two, but I'll see what I can get done in the meantime. I just needed to write all that out, I guess.

Is it possible that what you've been trying to do is merge tags, that is, change a bunch of the tags to another tag you've already used? I used to have an elijah tag and then when I started reading Lotrips fic that didn't have elijah in it I started using a lotrips tag. Then I tried to rename the elijah tag as lotrips and it wouldn't work. I think I had to go back, retag each individual lotrips entry as elijah, destroy the lotrips tag, and only then could I switch them all. (I'm sorry if that doesn't make sense!)
