Brokeback Mountain short story

Thanks to geniusartist for the link to Annie Proulx's short story, Brokeback Mountain. Probably copywright infringement by whoever posted it, but I'm grateful anyway. And also more or less destroyed.

By the way, are all my fellow Elijah angst fans reading geniusartist's lovely and heartbreaking fics? You can get a taste of them on her Mirrormere page but should then friend her journal for more recent chapters. And even if that's not the kind of fic you're into, she's a delightful person and her other entries are also good reading.

Ah, no. I couldn't quite take cold turkey either. I knew I would go insane if I didn't get any fic at all, so I gave myself two hours of LJ contact/fic reading time every four days. (And lots of time for fantasizing.) And toward the end of it, yeah, started writing my own Zekasey because I hadn't made a rule against it and I was needing slash so badly.

The first time I got to read Brokeback Mountain, it was through someone sharing a word document with me. But I have the collection that its in, now, and I've read it since then.

Wrote fic for it, too. *wry grin*

Goodness, I should really just explain myself in another post, rather than make cryptic comments as I have been doing. I always have this vague guilty feeling about doing posts not related to fannish interests, but what I'm doing is probably worse...

Except I'd kind of rather read fic or play cards with my mom than write it all out.

Ah, it is not a Brokeback fic but the original story on which the movie is based, first published in The New Yorker and then in Proulx's book, Close Range: Wyoming Stories. Surprisingly quite short but still devestating.

I meant to tell you that I thoroughly enjoyed that oh-so-porny tig you did with geniusartist not too far back. I was not expecting the ending you gave it at all and I thought you both handled it wonderfully. That whole accidentally unlocked journal entry idea was really clever and I just love the idea of collaborative fic.

I'm glad you enjoyed Brokeback Mountain. Amazing, wasn't it? I read this review somewhere about how Ang Lee was actually more delicate in his portrayal of the story than how Proust actually wrote her story -- her style of writing I mean. I'm not normally a big fan of short stories, but there are gems like that that just... I really so admire writers who can put so much into very few words. I don't think it's easy.

And agreed with you, the story destroyed me, too.

*squishes back* It's a shame my shout-outs aren't especially effective. Most of the people who read my journal are more into hobbits, but I figured I should say something anyway.

The story was really great, but there were so many beautiful little details from the movie that aren't there at all. I really loved the way they developed the female characters who are just barely mentioned in the original. Loved that Thanksgiving scene at Jack's house, for instance.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to go again. But I don't think I can handle it right away.

Thank you for the rec. I'm pretty much devouring all of her works (except the one extremely angsty one - I wouldn't be able to cope with the subj matter - the water works would start and not stop).

Are you avoiding the cancer one? Because it's really good, but I could understand a person needing to stay away. But yeah, I was totally devouring when I started reading her fics too. Being caught up is a little strange.

Oh, just that the story is so sad that it's a little hard to think about other stuff. I'm really glad I read it though.
