Happiness day 11: Coldplay
I really like Coldplay's new album, Viva la Vida. I think I like it as a whole album better than A Rush of Blood and X and Y even though those have some songs that I like better than any of the new songs. Most of the new songs don't really stick out to me but I like the way they fit together. I think Parachutes is still my favorite but I've only had the new one for a week so it's hard to say.
Sometimes I'm embarrassed by how much I love Coldplay (and U2), like if I were really cool I'd be into some indie bands nobody else had ever heard of. I remember when X and Y came out and there was some interview where Elijah said it sucked. I was all, Damn it, Elijah, you're the reason I started listening to this band in the first place, and now you abandon me? But so it is. I am hopelessly mainstream.
It probably helps that I don't really get sick of music from hearing it a lot, unless it's something that I wouldn't have liked anyway. So I haven't really listened to anything but this album for the last week. (Except today I listened to Zooropa twice and it was still awesome.) You know how people say that "Clocks" got played way too much? I agree, but only because that meant that everybody else got sick of it, so now they don't want to hear it anymore. I can still listen to it over and over. I love the songs on more recent albums that are similar to it, with their funny little piano ostenato phrases.
I think I read something a few years ago that said that "Clocks" was the "Where the Streets Have No Name" (or maybe it was one of those other Joshua Tree songs, or I could totally be making this up, I don't remember) of its generation, that it makes everyone who listens to it feel like they're the star of their own movie. I love that. This is how their music makes me feel in general. I am the star of my own movie!

They sound sort of like U2 (especially the guitar part, not so much the singing). Here are some links to some videos in case you're interested/can watch them where you are:
Viva la Vida from the new album (boring video but cool song)
Fix You from the previous album (definitely has that dramatic feeling I was talking about and also my sing-along kink at the end)
The Scientist from the album before that (the coolest of their videos that I've seen)
Yellow from the first album (♥ ♥ ♥)
