Dear Yuletide Writer (this is long)
Dear Yuletide Writer,
THANK YOU SO MUCH for offering to write in one of these fandoms! I was refreshing the requested fandoms page a lot last week and it was so exciting to see other people offering to write these as well as requesting them. Maybe you are one of the other people who requested the same things as me and maybe we will get multiple stories! Or maybe you are just a generous person writing something you didn't request. Either way, this is going to be awesome and I will love what you do!
I am pretty easy in that I like gen, boyslash, girlslash, and het, and I don't have a lot of squicks. So if you have a different idea from what I wrote in the details you should go with that! Last year (my first Yuletide) I wrote a longish letter about my general tastes in fic and that stuff all still holds.* This year I am just going to talk a little more about the fandoms I requested. They are all movies that are pretty easy to find so if you feel stuck on the one where we matched maybe you will feel like trying something else.
Children of Men – Luke and/or Kee
Akeelah and the Bee – Akeelah and Javier
The Lookout – Chris Pratt
And then there was this lovely movie, which I'd somehow missed when it was in theaters. I read a review somewhere that said The Lookout couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a caper movie or a social drama. I totally wanted it to be a social drama! I would happily have watched a movie about Chris getting through a normal day but I was a little bit bored by the whole bank robbery plot and really uncomfortable with the way Gary and Luvlee and the others were taking advantage of him. So don't be afraid to go dark, because I can take violence or death or awkwardness or whatever, and I totally ate up the angst that was there in the movie, but please don't make the fic about someone taking advantage of Chris or laughing at him!
Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay - Harold and Kumareven if they don't realize it so they say stupid homophobic things in the movies. This is the only comedy I've requested. I find humor difficult to write but I loved reading some of the funny fics at last year and I admire people who can do it.
Also I know we're not allowed to request crossovers, but if you don't like my college flashback idea and can't think of anything else to write, I'll just mention that I have a serious crush on President-Elect Obama. And I mean, George Bush is a character in the second movie, right? So it's almost like Barack is part of the fandom already and just. Yeah, you know. *cough*
So anyway, those are my flailings, but of course you should go in whatever direction you like! Please have fun with this and do not stress!
I may as well mention now that I'll be traveling on Christmas morning. I think I should still be able to comment sometime that day but if you miss me it's probably because I'm stuck in an airport or something, not because I don't care or because I don't like your fic!
Yay, Yuletide! Yay, you!
Love,
-Sophie
*At the time I was being all secretive about what fandoms I requested because I'd also offered to write them and I didn't want anyone to know. But then I found out how much fun it is to read other people's requests so I did things differently this year and only offered things I didn't request. But my requested fandoms last year were Children of Men, Mysterious Skin, Pan's Labyrinth, and Homicide: Life on the Street. Three-Part Disharmony, the Homicide fic that got written for me, was totally awesome.

Children of Men – Luke and/or Kee
- I'd love backstory or futurefic for *either* Kee or Luke, no need to include them both unless that's what inspires you. Some things I've wondered about are the family Luke grew up in (his little sister), how Kee came in contact with Julian and the Fishes, or what happened to Kee and Dylan on board the Tomorrow. Gen or any kind of pairing would be great (Kee/Miriam intrigues me) but no PWP please. Do not be afraid to go dark and brutal, or sweet and tender, or both, as the spirit moves you.
Akeelah and the Bee – Akeelah and Javier
- I'd love to see how the relationship between these two develops after the end of the movie. You could write about their friendship just afterwards, or take it some years later if you feel like going to a smutty place. Does Akeelah go back to her old school or move to that fancy one? What other subjects are they interested in and good at? How do they get along with each other's families? Are there cultural conflicts or happy cross-cultural discoveries? It would be great if you could also include appearances by some other movie characters like Dylan, Tanya, and/or Dr. Larabee.
The Lookout – Chris Pratt
- I would love a story about a relationship between Chris and someone else with a disability. If romantic/sexual, I'd prefer that it be with a woman – could be Janet, Kelly, or an OC, but not Luvlee, please – anything from an awkward conversation to explicit sex. Alternatively I'd love a friendship fic about Chris and Lewis, maybe how they first became roommates or a post-movie story where they're working together at the restaurant.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay - Harold and Kumar
- How adorable were Harold and Kumar in the flashback to their time in college? I would love a story from that period, maybe just as they're getting to know each other, maybe with a bit of awkward slash. Vanessa can be present or not but I'd like the main focus to be on the boys.
