Some songs I like

I've been downloading and listening to more music lately since I've had my iPod, and I was thinking I should try sharing music on LJ more often, since I like it so much when other people do that. I don't have a website or a MegaUpload account or anything, so I'm using a basic YouSendIt account where the links will expire after a week. This makes me think I ought to try posting music once a week, say five songs every Friday or something like that. We'll see how it goes. Let me know if you have any trouble downloading these or if you have a suggestion for a better way of posting them.

I might try themes later but today I just have five songs that I like:

Undertow by R.E.M.
I've had this album, New Adventures in Hi-Fi for a couple years, but pretty much only listened to one song from it, "Electrolite", until the last couple weeks. It's never going to be my favorite album of theirs but some of the songs are really growing on me, and I like that line "I am breathing water" a lot.

Hurricane Eye by Paul Simon
You're the One is another album that it took me a long time to get into even though Paul Simon's probably my all-time favorite songwriter. (The CD was a gift from my college friend L., who was my roommate at the time, and I think she was really pretty hurt that I didn't appreciate it like she'd hoped.) But now I like the whole album and one of my favorite parts is the "Peaceful as a hurricane eye" bit on this song. (I'm not crazy about the very end of the song.)

Braided Hair - 1 Giant Leap featuring Speech, Neneh Cherry & Ulali
Hee, I was going to say that I didn't know anything about this song and artist (I got it off the Putumayo compilation Global Soul) but that I liked it because it reminded me of that Arrested Development song "Tennessee", but it turns out it's the same lead singer, Speech. :D

Sabrina/Gaz Naturel and Gazel au Fond de la Nuit by Gnawa Diffusion
This is a band that combines music of the Gnawa people (North African descendents of slaves and migrants from sub-Saharan Africa) with reggae and other international styles, and they sing mostly in Arabic but sometimes in French and mixing in other languages. (At the concert I went to they also did a Bob Marley song in English!) This first song is my favorite of theirs for rocking out but I usually listen to it with the other, which is a very different and more traditional style, because I like the way they flow into each other on the album. The lyrics of the second are from a poem by Louis Aragon.

Yay! I'm glad you posted these! Um...some of the links are screwy? I don't know if it's LJ being weird or the coding, but like I don't know...maybe they'd work anyway if I cut and pasted to another tab...

Thanks for doing these! I actually wish that more people on my flist would share their favorite music on a regular basis (I know it's a pain omg!)

It's a pain, and kinda sorta illegal. Record companies have been busting people for using their songs as background music on YouTube! Eep!
