Happiness day 15: Harry Potter movie
Today I'm happy that I got to see the new Harry Potter movie completely unspoiled (you know, apart from having read the book a few years ago). I had thought it was coming out on the weekend and I'm happy that it was easy for me to head out to the mall when I found out this afternoon that it was playing already, and not a big deal for me to stick around there for an extra hour and a half when it turned out the first show was sold out.
I also really enjoyed the movie itself. Not as much as I did the one before, but that's not surprising since I also liked book 5 more than book 6. I thought the effects were neat, especially in the early scenes, and the stuff in the cave at the end was appropriately horrifying. The heteronormativity was kind of tedious and depressing but expected. I was hoping they'd do something differently to make me like Ginny more and they didn't, but I liked the way we saw Harry's feelings about her developing.
This movie had less hot Harry/Snape interaction than the previous one, but there were some nice moments. Harry/Slughorn was unexpected and enjoyably creepy, from my perspective. I mean, the way Harry realized Dumbledore needed him toseduce get information from his professor and that Harry was excited about that, not bothered that Dumbledore was using him like that. (Also knowing what we now know about just how manipulative Dumbledore was.) I hope the Harry/Draco fans are enjoying themselves! I'm sure Snape/Draco fans are! I'm still not a Draco fan but I did think he looked pretty!
I wonder how the ending played to people who don't know what happens Deathly Hallows. At one point I was frowny and feeling like they were making it too obvious but it's hard to know. The rhythm of the end was different from what I'd imagined when I was reading it. It was a lot slower, both the action itself and the delivery of the lines, especially Snape's, whom I'd imagined being a lot angrier. Then again I don't know if it seemed to go really quickly to me in the book because I was so shocked by what had happened.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading other people's posts about it and some official reviews, and probably rewatching the fifth movie on DVD, and then going back to the theater, maybe next week, to see it again with those other reactions in mind. This is how I like to do things. Yay, movies!
I went by myself and was surrounded by teenagers, including this couple, a guy and a girl, sitting just to my left who clearly would rather have been having sex than watching a movie. During the previews he was massaging her bare feet in his lap and leaning over and kissing her and then they were murmuring little things to each other and kissing all the way through. Whatever! They were kind of obnoxious but in an amusing way and it seemed fitting for some of the themes of the movie.
Oh and also! I saw a preview for the movie of Where the Wild Things Are and it looked really neat! Does anyone know what that music is?
If you feel like responding creatively to HBP, check out hbpchallenge on LJ, now accepting prompts for fic, art, and meta. It will have the fun of an anonymous challenge without the stress of a gift exchange, competition, or minimum word limit (in fact there's a maximum word limit of 1000). You can leave prompts without committing yourself to anything. Fanworks need to be posted by July 29 and then we'll all have a chance to read and admire and guess at the authors before the reveal on August 1st.
