Friends,

I've been having some troubles with my laptop for the last few days. I don't know if it's a problem with the power cord or the battery or what, but the battery won't charge so it shuts down all the time. I'm going to try to finish up a challenge fic on a school computer today, which is a little strange for me. Anyway, if I fail to comment or to respond to comments, that's why. I hope I can get this resolved and get caught up with my f-list soon.

I had the same problem last year, and it turned out to be a loose connection where the power cord plugged into the laptop. Hope you get it fixed quickly!

That's good to know. I do seem to be able to keep it on by pressing and fiddling with that connection, but when I knock the computer around at all, even by typing too vigorously, I can lose it and I get the critical low battery message. The computer's a couple years old, but I just bought this power cord and battery about a month ago. They were working fine until Monday. :(

Same problem - didn't know laptop wasn't getting power, it crashed (emergency shutdown) and wouldn't recharge. Cracked casing on power cord - new cord, fixed! (after sending it back to manufacturer and enduring the hell of thinking I'd lost the HD, which has happened subsequently for unrelated reasons. Aaargh!)

*pets gently* Perhaps take it to store that sells same model and try a power cord there? The staff where I tried it (Best Buy) were very nice.

Thanks for the advice. I've actually had power cort problems before, I think because I lug my computer around a lot and am not especially careful with the cord. The computer is a Dell so there's no store around and I need to send away for new parts. I've bought new cords at Best Buy and the people there didn't treat me well at all, but that's another rant and I'll spare you. The point is, this power cord is new, so I'm thinking the problem might be with the laptop and not as easy to fix.

(I'm very sorry about your hard drive!! I live in fear of that!)

Ugh. So many people are having problems with their computer this month (including me). Hope you can figure out what's wrong with it and get it fixed soon! *hugs* Like others have said, sounds like it's a faulty connection.

I've had some problems before but I really thought I could take care of it with a new power cord. Ah well. I'm glad I have access to the computers at school and that our office isn't terribly busy in the summer.

I wonder...if it's the power cord...whether you could get one of those universal power cords and see if it worked? The same thing was happening to me for awhile. In my case, it turns out my computer was overheating. My solution has been to blow air into the vents every few weeks or so when it just starts shutting down ... but that doesn't sound like it's your problem. I hope it gets fixed soon!

The thing is, a universal powercord at Best Buy costs close to $100, as opposed to $20 for a powercord for this computer from Dell. Besides that, I have both and the computer is doing the same thing with both of them. That is, it runs, but the battery doesn't charge, and the power connection is easily knocked out. I think it's more likely what Shirebound said, a problem with the port on the laptop rather than with the cord.

*does not want to send it to Dell through the mail omg*
