Fannish new year's post
I was more fannish in 2017 than in 2016, though it was the first year since I got into fandom in 2005 that I didn't write any fic. Three significant things I did this year were:
So, the archiving thing. It's tedious and time-consuming and nobody else cares that I'm doing doing it, apart from, I imagine, a general feeling that it would be nice to be able to find podfics on the AO3. I had resolved to finish this in 2015 and then didn't resolve in 2016 because I felt so bad about failing, and then I resolved again in 2017 and I didn't quite stick with my schedule but I did finish in October. Now that's done and I sometimes get kudos on old stuff, and I get a nice sense of satisfaction from having things organized.
My other two fannish resolutions for 2017 were:
In the end I made 11 fanworks – all podfics! This is counting five #itpe podfics that I've submitted but that haven't officially been posted yet, and it is not counting some other things I've recorded and edited in the last week. It's also not counting a the live reading I did at
podfication or a couple other things that are showing up in my works at the AO3.
They're all under an hour and it's a very small number compared to what I did a few years ago and to what some of my friends have posted about in their year-in-review posts, however it's way better than what I did in 2016, which was zero podfics.
They were in seven different fandoms, and only one of them was for Star Wars, which is pretty funny since the vast majority of the fic I read in 2017 was for Rogue One. And this fall I finally watched original movies all the way through (they'd always just been around). I've watched The Last Jedi twice and have recorded three sequels podfics in the last week. Ha ha ha.
I won't do a graph this year, but I'll note that all 11 of them had ladies, and there were a lot of stories that weren't focused on a two-person ship, but were more complicated configurations, or else gen with sex/shippiness. I'm cool with continuing that trend in 2018. Boyslash is awesome but the Internet's got plenty of it. :)
podfication was awesome in all kinds of ways. I am so grateful to the organizers for doing such a great job and for accommodating different levels of participation. Since I made the decision about going a little earlier this year than last, I also went to the effort of submitting a clip for the in-person lovefest and signing up for the live reading and, while the latter was stressful, I'm really glad I did both. On the other hand, I didn't try to lead any panels or organize multivoice readings (I did join in on one), and that was fine. Hearing people chat about Podfic Broken Telephone got me to sign up and that was one of my favorite things I did this year, and in general I just feel more of a personal connection with the community now, even though I've lost so many of my Merlin fandom connections.
I was sort of upset to realize a couple weeks ago that this would be my first year without fic (I'd just written one in 2016), and I made people on Twitter and in the Discord podfic chat give me prompts. Then I realized I'd just be writing for the sake of having written something and not because I had anything to say or because anyone would want to read it. And it was stressing me out and I decided not to do it. I also decided not to read too much into it, like, it doesn't mean I'm never gonna write again. I came back from zero podfics to more podfics (and will almost certainly make more than 11 in 2018), and at some point I'll probably come back to writing fic, and if not that will also be okay.
I feel like my therapist would approve of those last couple sentences. :D
As for posting on Dreamwidth, I only showed up five of the twelve months. However, I did make ten posts, and that is something (and again, more than I'd done in 2016).
So! Fannish resolutions for 2018:
Ten fanworks should not be a problem at all. Right now my big project is to podfic a bunch of different femslash pairings for Femslash February. My secret ambition is to make 14 of them so I can post one every two days that month, and (obviously) my super-secret ambition is to make 28. I've done a lot of recording and editing in the last week so I'm feeling energetic now, but I'll be traveling next week and then work will get busy again, so I won't be able to maintain that. I'm also hoping that Awesome Ladies Podfic Anthology will happen again and I'll contribute something to that.
Should I sign up for a fic writing challenge or will that just stress me out and make me miserable like
camelot_remix did in 2016 (even though that should have been a delightful assignment)? Idk idk but if you see something that you think would be good for me give me a holler. I'm especially interested in
Posting things other than fanworks, eh, it always seems like it'll be super easy but inertia is a thing. And I don't really expect to start making Tumblr posts but I want to keep that possibility in mind. Tumblr is confusing to me and I generally prefer the content here on Dreamwidth, but more of the authors whose Star Wars fics I've been reading seem to be active over there and maybe that is the way to engage. I am still on Twitter pretty much every day and grateful for the friendships and interactions I have there.
- finishing archiving my old podfics
- attending
podfication
- getting interested in Star Wars

- Star Wars and Merlin
- ladies
- remixes
- small wordcount minimums
- deadlines in May and June (and definitely not late July or early August)

My podfic has never felt as *organised* as it does on AO3, it was worth the effort of putting my backlog up there years ago. You'll enjoy getting random kudos:D

I recorded a podfic in the last week of December so that I had posted at least one this year, I needed that extra motivation because it's been since early *last* year that I posted anything. I'm not sure why I'm so less prolific these days, I'm still consuming as much fannish output as ever.
