HP in 3D
I meant to say something about going to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at the IMAX theater at Navy Pier in downtown Chicago while we were there for the moot a few weeks ago. I went with ![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
b_briarwood and vshendria. We'd all read the book and seen the movie already, so there were no huge surprises, but it was still really wonderful seeing it on such a huge screen, and with a big section toward the end in 3D.
Most of it was in 2D but even so having the huge screen and seeing it again made it easier to see all kinds of little details, like the kitten pin on Umbridge's sweater and (Vshendria pointed out) the sweaters on the kittens on those little plates in her office. It was also just more involving, for me, seeing it with other fans and being able to concentrate on the emotional stuff, since the first time I saw it I'd been pretty overwhelmed taking it all in, and also being nervous that it wouldn't be good. So for example this time I cried a little when Sirius was telling Harry that the world isn't divided into good people and Death Eaters.
The signal to put on your 3D glasses come when the kids get on the thestrals, so you have 3D through the whole battle sequence at the Ministry of Magic and take them off right after the possession scene. This didn't always work perfectly in that often figures looked blurry or you could see two outlines at once, but it was still really awesome in general. I think it's Luna that you see riding toward the audience on the thestral and it really looked and felt like she was coming right off the screen. All the big action stuff after that was great, but for me the coolest bits of 3D were two moments when there were a ton of tiny little details: first when Voldemort is slanting the million little pieces of glass at Harry and Dumbledore, and then a little after that, when there are all these tiny little grains of sand, just hanging in the air and barely moving. I was really glad I got to see that!
Vshendria hadn't had a chance to read Deathly Hallows yet, but she asked if knowing how things were going to turn out made me interpret the movie differently. It didn't, much. I'd seen the movie twice the week before I read the book so all those images of the characters were really fresh in my mind and it was easy to make connections between them.
One part that it's been really nice to see multiple times though – because it all goes by so fast – is when Harry's possessed by Voldemort and he has all those little flashes of things that have come before, including scenes from the earlier movies. The one bit of that that hit me a lot harder this time was Harry looking in the mirror and seeing Voldemort's face (moving his neck in that snake-like movement they both have), and Voldemort saying "Look at me!" I just loved the "Look at me" moment Harry had in Dumbledore's office earlier in the movie (SO MUCH MORE POWERFUL THAN ALL THE SHOUTING HE DID IN THE BOOK!) and bringing that line back in the middle of all these crazy images and all this emotion, and also knowing now that those will be Snape's last words...well, it was awesome. I think once I get my hands on the DVD I'll be watching those bits quite a few times.
