Once again I had a really great time at [community profile] podfication, and I hope it'll work out for me to go again next year.

Hello, here is some meta for the “leather/latex/rubber” square on my [community profile] kink_bingo card. Some of the post is negative about leather.

Hey folks, I'll be on the road for most of the next five weeks, and might not be checking this email at all this next week, but I'll get back to you eventually.

[Oh hey, an hour after I posted this I remembered that I'll be able to access these accounts with my iPod Touch, so never mind I guess! :)]

CONvergence attendees, if you tweet @sophinisba I should get a text message, and a couple of you will have my phone number. I'm planning on showing up Friday morning.

I was going to make a giant post about how awesome Dreamwidth is, but my computer's giving me trouble so I guess you'll be spared most of that proselytizing for now. :) I'll just link to the latest dw-news post, which has links to some very helpful resources for newbies and a preview of the new update page that they'll be implementing soon. Along with being intensely shiny, I think this new page is a great example of Dreamwidth asking their users what they want, following through, and responding to feedback as they go. (You know, because their business is about satisfying the users who pay for their service, rather than drawing in ad money. *suppresses much longer rant*)

I've got an appointment at the Apple Store in a few hours, no idea whether they'll fix it then, tell me there's nothing wrong and send me home, or take my beloved computer into custody. D: In any case I'll be going out of town this afternoon and won't be back until Tuesday, so even if I get to take my Macbook with me I probably won't be online much. If I don't answer your e-mail or fail to comment on your awesome [community profile] femslash10 story, I promise it's nothing personal!

Hello! I only slept about two hours last night but surprisingly am feeling pretty good now. I got all my traveling out of the way this morning and Lora and I have had a relaxing afternoon watching BSG and talking about fandom, waiting for [livejournal.com profile] beruscats, [livejournal.com profile] claudia603, and [livejournal.com profile] hanarobi to arrive later tonight.

I meant to do another Yuletide recs post but I haven't had time to read much in the last couple days, so just a couple quick links tonight:

Paul Simon songs:
Down By The Schoolyard has a great narrative voice and actually makes the lyrics to "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" make sense.

How We Begin to Remember does an amazing job weaving together elements from lots of different songs on one of my all-time favorite albums, Graceland.

There are lots of other fics for songs by Bruce Springsteen, the Beatles, Amanda Palmer, and others. Here is the list of fandoms.

National Public Radio:
Wait Wait Don't Eat Me is Wait Wait Don't Tell Me for the zombie apocalypse.

I would also like to call everyone's attention to the Archive of Our Own's Zombies tag.

Oh oh and!
Merlin:
A great [livejournal.com profile] camelotsolstice fic you may have missed, Moment of Yew, 26,000 words of plotty gen with surprising magic and OT4 love.

Yay, people are doing the meme where the talk about all the fic they've written this year. I love that one and I'm enjoying reading people's thoughts about their own writing. I will do it too but I want to wait until after I can claim my anonymous fest fics. Camelotsolstice and Yuletide talk )

A note to my Yuletide Goat(s): traveling )

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] baranduin for making me laugh so much tonight with her very historically accurate and Mary-Renault-canon-faithful Happy First Everest Summit card and other holiday cards she's been posting. Thanks also to all of you who've sent me cards in the last few days: [livejournal.com profile] trianne, [livejournal.com profile] claudia603, [livejournal.com profile] frolijah_fan_54, [livejournal.com profile] westmoon, [livejournal.com profile] hyel (who also made me laugh), and [livejournal.com profile] rubynye (your Santa Lucia card warms my Swedish-American heart!). I didn't respond to a lot of address-collecting posts this year since I'm not sending cards myself, but it has been nice to receive them and I appreciate the time and effort and postage you put into them. :) If I have forgotten anyone I apologize! Am a bit scatterbrained between Yuletide Madness and getting ready to leave town for a few days.

Merry Christmas, my dear friends! Thank you all for being a part of my life. I hope you have a wonderful holiday.

Today I'm happy that I've stuck to my tiny daily writing goals so far this month. I've written at least 100 words of fic every day, most of it on my Doctor Who fic for the [livejournal.com profile] tindogs_fic exchange. To be honest, this is really not going very well. I've been treating it like a chore and not enjoying it much at all. Most days as soon as I get over the 100 words (which is really very little) I stop and go to do something easier. Connected to that, what I've written has been pretty bad and I still don't know what I'm doing with the story, which needs to be posted by the end of the month. I like the assignment I got but I'm not sure it was a great idea to jump into a new fandom with an exchange where I'll really be letting someone down if I don't finish or if my story sucks. :( I just don't know what I'm doing, writing wise; I feel disconnected from my old hobbit stuff but I haven't found my place with a new fandom either. Still, I am proud for having stuck to the resolution at least, and today I brought it over 1000 words, which is the fest minimum, so that is a happy-making milestone.

I've also stuck with doing this happy meme every day since I started on the second, and I'm feeling really good about that. I worry that I'll run out of happy things to post about and that keeps me looking for them all the time, even looking for the bright side of things that bug me. For instance, yesterday almost as soon as I realized I'd gotten my period I started trying to spin it into something positive (not pregnant, will have most of it over with when I travel next week, etc.). It's nice having an excuse to post about stuff that's not newsworthy or profound but that's on my mind but that could be a chance for a connection with one or two people on my f-list. And of course it cheers me up to write them out.

I'm not sure how well I'll be able to keep up with either of these things while I'm in Seattle next week (the 13th to the 18th) or once school starts up at the end of the month, but I will try. Heck, maybe being busier will be good for me and help me get organized and motivated, or something.

Thank you!

Thank you, friends, for helping make yesterday such a great birthday for me!

off lj )

I am delighted with the ficlets people wrote for me. [livejournal.com profile] mews1945 got at my sentimental side with Bath Time, a lovely, tender fic about wee Frodo and Merry; [livejournal.com profile] honeyandvinegar and [livejournal.com profile] lilybaggins got at my kinky side with Casey/Zeke haikus and a Frodo/Aragorn drabble; and [livejournal.com profile] claudia603 got at my kinkily sentimental side with a drabble in which Merry pays attention to Frodo's scars (it is G-rated gen omg but still). I also had a good chat with [livejournal.com profile] danachan and she sent me a draft a beautiful fic that continues our shared Saga of Celandine and Periwinkle. It made me feel all warm and happy to read.

What really kept me feeling happy and loved all day (eh, starting Tuesday night and continuing into today) was the steady stream of good wishes from so many of my friends in posts, comments, v-gifts (from [livejournal.com profile] alchemilla, [livejournal.com profile] layne67, and [livejournal.com profile] hanarobi) and e-mails. Thank you all so very much. I'm really grateful that you're part of my life.

I meant to say something about going to see Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix at the IMAX theater at Navy Pier in downtown Chicago while we were there for the moot a few weeks ago. I went with [livejournal.com profile] b_briarwood and [livejournal.com profile] vshendria. We'd all read the book and seen the movie already, so there were no huge surprises, but it was still really wonderful seeing it on such a huge screen, and with a big section toward the end in 3D. spoilers for the film and also for book 7 )

I won't be posting Deathly Hallows spoilers here. In fact, you probably won't see much of me at all next week since I'll be staying off-line most of the time to read (I'm a fairly slow reader) and then leaving for Chicago Wednesday morning. I'm meeting up with some friends from college in the days before [livejournal.com profile] elfmoot2007 and I'm very excited about all that.

For now though I'm working to finish my remix fic and doing a whole lot of fic reading, and I'm enjoying myself so much! I've read some excellent challenge fics that I can't say anything about yet because they haven't been posted, but I'm looking forward to them coming out. Here are some links to some great public fics in several fandoms. Most of them are famous fics that everyone who reads the respective pairing knows about already, but I figure it won't do any harm for me to mention them again. :)

Watching Lost live on a decent-sized TV for once and the first three minutes were awesome!

I wrote Lost genfic on the plane today! I haven't done that before and it was not awesome, but it was fun.

One of my favorite rps writers, [livejournal.com profile] almostnever, finished Meltdown, a Zeke/Casey fic she wrote for the [livejournal.com profile] fandom_mashup challenge. The mashup works sort of like a remix but combines elements from more than one fic, and since she was assigned to me she took some ideas from several of my stories in different fandom (but especially the Stokely fic, which makes me very happy because that’s my favorite of my Faculty fics) but made something that is completely original and unpredictable. The writing is great, the science makes a heck of a lot more sense than what they gave us in the original movie, and also there is Zeke/Casey porn.

My story The Silent Street, written for a [livejournal.com profile] waymeet challenge back in the spring, won the MEFA Thain of the Great Smials Award for Merry and Pippin fics. This was very exciting because that’s another fic of mine of which I am really fond, and it’s been wonderful to see people reading and reacting to it beyond those few days after I first posted it on LJ. Congratulations to the other folks who were honored and many thanks to those who participated in these awards!

Most exciting of all, last night I bought a ticket to go and visit [livejournal.com profile] claudia603 and [livejournal.com profile] danachan next month! I have met Claudia just once and have never met Dana, though they're too of my best friends, so I am just thrilled that this is happening. I will bring my laptop and we shall plot all kinds of horrible things to do to Frodo and Pippin. And I'll be able to get away from this cold weather in January. Squee!!!!

Many thanks to those who responded to my request for requests yesterday. Your ideas are having just the effect I had hoped, that is, causing me to stretch, and to try things that wouldn't otherwise have occurred to me. I do intend to write at least 100 words for each of you, but isn't it funny how some bunnies bite harder than others? I'd considered putting something in that post about "fictional persons only," and am so glad I didn't because [livejournal.com profile] aprilkat came along and asked for something I've been wanting to read but hadn't ever thought of writing myself: Elijah in Prague. The ficlet I've come up with has no slash and, well, no plot either, really. It's just an little expression of my affection for a lovely man, a lovely city, a lovely book and movie. (Nevertheless: fiction fiction fiction, not true, no disrespect intended, no money made, etc.) Rated G.
