Atonement

On Wednesday my mom and I went to see Atonement. I suppose it won't be to everyone's tastes, but for me it was absolutely wonderful, and I recommend it very highly. Here is a non-spoilery review that we pretty much agree with. We especially like the part where the reviewer says that Joe Wright did a fine job with Pride and Prejudice but that this material is even better suited for his style.

My mom thinks it might be her favorite movie ever. She read the book last year and this was her third time seeing the movie. As soon as we got done watching I told her that I wanted to read the book and then see the movie again too so I could appreciate it better. I'm about a hundred pages into the book now and it's awesome in all kinds of other ways than how the movie was awesome. I am just thrilled with both of them.

I don't suppose there will be fic since there are no magical creatures, spaceships, or pirates, and it's not especially slashy. But I do think there ought to be fic for many reasons which include
+a precocious young girl with an overactive imagination who writes part of the story
+James McAvoy
+Keira Knightly
+James McAvoy With Scars
+Keira Knightly Practically Naked
+Cross-generational Wrongness
+Keira Knightly and James McAvoy Smoking
+James McAvoy Feverish and Delirious
+Wartime Angst
+LibrarySex (like wallsex, but with books!!)
+Weird metafictional stuff what will appeal to writers and people who like having multiple versions of a story
+Dramatic Use of the Word Cunt

One of the kinds of fic that I think should exist is Atonement/Narnia crossover! This has sort of been in my head since I saw the preview for Atonement because it showed this young British girl talking to an older man in a big old house, and there were also little flashes of stuff from WWII. Those scenes actually take place years apart, but I think you could still do something really interesting with it, especially considering the James McAvoy connection. See, Briony is traumatized by what she sees and that's what causes her to go hide in some part of the house she's never explored before and to see what she does when she goes through the wardrobe. When she meets Mr. Tumnus she has all kinds of confused feelings about him because of the crush she has on Robbie!

Okay, so maybe that is a silly idea. Still, great movie!

Also, I've rarely seen such gorgeous production values in a film. Quality all the way down the line.

James McAvoy is teh sexxeh in this, too.

I may have to go and see this, if it's playing at our theater. Wasn't going to, but your review makes me curious.

I'd been wanting to see it, but wasn't in the mood to see something heavy the last time we were discussing going to see a movie (when I was with my parents)...

I haven't seen the movie but I read the book a few years ago and really enjoyed it. I'm glad you're reading it (and enjoying it) too! :)

I'm not reading this to avoid spoilers, but a friend of mine told me that I must see this movie because it was excellent! It's great to hear your concurrence. I loved your little list. :D Cheers!

It's always nice when a good movie helps us discover a good book - that's what the LOTR movies did for me!!
