A note to my Yuletide Goat(s): I will be leaving early tomorrow morning and travelling most of the day, and though I do expect to have Internet access this week I probably won't have much privacy. I am very excited to read your story! If you are waiting to hear from me, please just be patient. And thank you for writing for me!

Thank you to baranduin for making me laugh so much tonight with her very historically accurate and Mary-Renault-canon-faithful Happy First Everest Summit card and other holiday cards she's been posting. Thanks also to all of you who've sent me cards in the last few days: trianne, claudia603, frolijah_fan_54, westmoon, hyel (who also made me laugh), and rubynye (your Santa Lucia card warms my Swedish-American heart!). I didn't respond to a lot of address-collecting posts this year since I'm not sending cards myself, but it has been nice to receive them and I appreciate the time and effort and postage you put into them. :) If I have forgotten anyone I apologize! Am a bit scatterbrained between Yuletide Madness and getting ready to leave town for a few days.

I speak no Swedish at all and have never been to Scandinavia! But all four of my dad's grandparents were from there and it's a really strong cultural influence in the place where I grew up. Thanks for the good wishes. *hugs*

When I showed last year's version to my (Swedish-American and more stereotypically Swedish looking with blond hair and blue eyes) roommate and she sort of paused and said, "She doesn't look very Swedish." And I said, "No! She's black!" I was so excited lol. I really love the way you and Hyel transformed that image and gave it new meaning. :) Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas, Sophie!! I'm half Swedish - my maternal grandfather came from Sweden when he was 17 and my maternal grandmother was Swedish too. For their 60th anniversary my cousin and I sang them a song in Swedish. And I used to know a Swedish prayer that Grandpa said every year - I've sadly forgotten it.

My great grandparents used to speak Swedish at home only when they needed to say something they didn't want my grandma to understand! It's not as big a part of my own life as it could have been, but it is a nice background to have and I know some of my other relatives have gotten more out of that connection that I have - have studied the language and had nice trips to Sweden and Norway.

I'm so glad that I'm no longer traveling. Staying in one place is so much easier, though we are also spending an awful lot of time driving around here! Things are crazy spread out and you can't get to a lot of places by walking or even running. :)
