Merlin recs and some other links and stuff

Yesterday I read a really lovely Merlin fic and I was thinking, "I need to rec this so that claudia603 will see it!" Then I got to the end and saw that the fic had been posted in February and already had three pages of comments, including one from Claudia, so I decided not to bother posting. But then today I realized that was silly because, hey, I loved the fic, why not say so? So anyway,

Into His Own by sarcasticbabble, Merlin/Arthur, 8500 words and rated R, though most of it reads like a gen fic. It's about Merlin going off on his own after Arthur finds out, and Merlin coming into his own as a sorcerer while Arthur does as a King. I really loved the language of this. There is a lot of M/A fic that's fun and a little silly, that makes a lot of Arthur's prattishness and has a lot of little clever asides and then sex and it's, you know, I enjoy that too, but I think this more restrained and weighty kind of fic is my favorite. It's the kind of thing where you can recognize the characters that are fun and adorable on the show but you also see them growing into the old legends, and the writing feels right for that.

It reminded me of a couple other fics that I also love, also dealing with lots of bad stuff happening and Arthur and Merlin being separated:

All the Laughter from Before by waldorph, M/A, 5,500+ words, R, which also comes with a great podfic made by the author.

Who Is Tied to Someone Else's Glove by allira_dream, 2000+ words, Gwen/Arthur with heavily implied Arthur/Merlin, Gwen/Morgana and Gwen/Lancelot, PG-13. Claudia and layne67 and I were talking last week about how much we like Arthur's way of saying Gwen's name and wondering how they might get together, whether on the show or in some hypothetical really awesome fic that we would write. :) And…we weren't really able to come up with much, but I do really like the relationship between them in this fic, and in particular the way he asks her to marry him.

I guess Harry/Draco fandom has had a kerfuffle with some bad feelings and that is a shame, but I did enjoy reading raitala's post about Newbies Versus Oldies and the discussion in comments about how people felt when they first came into fandom and how their perceptions have changed.

Seriously though I was reading the comments at that post and remembering how welcoming and supportive everyone was (or you know most people were) when I showed up and how Lily betaed my fic and how I wrote you those long letters from Poland that first summer and it made me feel very lucky and happy.

I look back on my early posts and the conversations I had with people (especially good friends) and my heart just aches with this whole nostalgia/love/gratitude/wistfulness thing... :) Part of it is missing people that are no longer around and part of it is missing more regularly interaction with people who are around but are not into fandom or as active and part of it is missing MYSELF being more active with fandom (that early passion). But it's all good! My SEVEN YEAR anniversary will be coming up in about a month! :)

I don't usually miss the old days very much because I was less comfortable with myself and my place then but it was good times when we were writing fic in comments to each other's journals, and also meta questions like what's a BNF were new and exciting to me. :)

As you know there are some good old days things I don't miss much and would do over, but there are some things that I sort of thought would just go on forever, even though it's not realistic to think that they would, and then they didn't and that was sad! :) Someone on my flist wrote some meta on BNF (fluterbev). I don't know if it's locked or not (too lazy to check)...:D

That is so kind of you to let me know that. I've seen you around different communities but I don't think I knew you were a Faculty fan. I miss writing in that fandom and it's really nice to know you liked my stories. Thank you!
