Two fic recs!
-Care and Feeding of (Fragile) Princes by srin, Arthur/Merlin, NC-17, 3400 words. I always feel a bit silly reccing a fic that's already got several pages of comments, especially one by an author who's known to most of the Merlin fans on my f-list...but, hey, look at this great fic! Especially recommended for fans of bottom!Arthur and emotionally-repressed!Arthur with Merlin taking care of him, done in a very subtle and lovely way.

-Yonder Comes the Morning by vanessarama aka andraste_oz, Arthur/Merlin or Arthur and Merlin (with Gaius), PG, 5800 words. Merlin gets bitten by a snake and the wound gets infected. OLD SCHOOL H/C WITH FEVERISH MERLIN AND STOIC ANGSTY ARTHUR. THIS IS THE BEST.

Two podfic recs!
-First Up Against the Wall (the grease and diesel oil remix), written by netgirl_y2k, read by via_ostiense, Gwen/Morgana, R, 27 minutes. I think most Merlin femslash fans know this awesome fic, but did you know there was a podfic? I had missed it and it's a lot of fun.

-Indulgence, written by allwithwings, read by misssnowfox, Arthur/Merlin, NC-17, 33 minutes. I think this is a really great example of what podfics are good for. It's a first-time with Arthur and Merlin talking (awkwardly at first, then sexily) about wanking, which would maybe not have been that interesting to me in a fic, but the reader does a really fabulous job with the way Merlin uses his voice and his fantasies to seduce Arthur - guh. Also it's a really clean and high-quality recording from someone who's new to podficcing (and a writer who's new to Merlin fandom). Let's encourage them to make more! (Note: there's a lot of talk in the fic about homosexuality being a perversion, with both characters seeming to kink on the wrongness of the thing they want. For me that was sexy but it might be unpleasant for some.)

Three requests!
-frigg is thinking of starting up an Uther/everyone comm here on Dreamwidth, since the mod of utherxtheboys seems to have gone away. Go tell her what a GREAT IDEA this is and vote on what the comm should be named!

-Hey Merlin artists (including people who like playing around with photoshop), feel like making a cover for a giant podfic? eosrose and I each have two requests. She's doing seperis's The Tale of the Sea Serpent and lisztful's Backdrifts and I'm doing srin's The Universal Language and new_kate's Little Wooden Boy and the Belly of Love.

I like commenting on fic that I read. It makes me happy to know that I'm encouraging authors that I like and making them feel good. This is a nice, easy way of participating in fandom even at times when I'm not feeling creative or finishing any stories myself. Reading a fic I like and not commenting makes me feel bad – it's true I often neglect to do it if I have to e-mail, but LJ/IJ/Dth makes it so easy, it seems silly not to. ( cut for length )

Anyway, the real reason for this post is that I signed up at idof_feedback to comment on 20 femslash fanworks by July 25th, and one of the requirements is to link to all the fanworks somewhere, so I'm doing it beneath the cut and will add to it as I go along. I'm at 12 so far so I expect to go over 20, especially with all the new stuff that's now available at remixredux09 and femslash09. I'm enjoying this – it sort of reminds me of 50books_poc where it's worth it to go out of my way to read something that I wouldn't necessarily pick up otherwise, and I sometimes find that I love it and sometimes not so much. I'm starting to get a better idea of my own taste in femslash and to look differently at how a lot of other fanfics neglect female characters.

I liked all of these fics (or I wouldn't have read them!) but I especially want to recommend What We've Become by thedeadparrot and What We've Become (The Mt. Saint Helens Remix), both Donna/Martha fics. When I was talking the other day about how much I like Gwen/Morgana I was sort of comparing it in my mind to shows like Doctor Who where you usually only get to have one female character at a time and I always thought femslash would be hard because the companions relate to each other through the Doctor, and some fans tend to pit the companions against each other and all that. Anyway, I really liked the Donna/Martha relationship being about Donna and Martha in both of these, and the Doctor and Jack being present but secondary to the women's story. Also they're just so well written. I wasn't crazy about the jumping around in time on the remix but I think it's still my favorite of the remixredux09 stories I've read so far. ( links )

Yesterday I read a really lovely Merlin fic and I was thinking, "I need to rec this so that claudia603 will see it!" Then I got to the end and saw that the fic had been posted in February and already had three pages of comments, including one from Claudia, so I decided not to bother posting. But then today I realized that was silly because, hey, I loved the fic, why not say so? So anyway,

Into His Own by sarcasticbabble, Merlin/Arthur, 8500 words and rated R, though most of it reads like a gen fic. It's about Merlin going off on his own after Arthur finds out, and Merlin coming into his own as a sorcerer while Arthur does as a King. I really loved the language of this. There is a lot of M/A fic that's fun and a little silly, that makes a lot of Arthur's prattishness and has a lot of little clever asides and then sex and it's, you know, I enjoy that too, but I think this more restrained and weighty kind of fic is my favorite. It's the kind of thing where you can recognize the characters that are fun and adorable on the show but you also see them growing into the old legends, and the writing feels right for that.

It reminded me of a couple other fics that I also love, also dealing with lots of bad stuff happening and Arthur and Merlin being separated:

All the Laughter from Before by waldorph, M/A, 5,500+ words, R, which also comes with a great podfic made by the author.

Who Is Tied to Someone Else's Glove by allira_dream, 2000+ words, Gwen/Arthur with heavily implied Arthur/Merlin, Gwen/Morgana and Gwen/Lancelot, PG-13. Claudia and layne67 and I were talking last week about how much we like Arthur's way of saying Gwen's name and wondering how they might get together, whether on the show or in some hypothetical really awesome fic that we would write. :) And…we weren't really able to come up with much, but I do really like the relationship between them in this fic, and in particular the way he asks her to marry him.
