CamelotRemix recs: "I wish fandom would give me more..." edition
I am so happy with the remix of my story "Be So Bold", you guys. I'd been reading some of the other CamelotRemix fics earlier in the week before they went public, but I'd promised the author of this one that I'd wait until the reveal, and I did, and it just made me so happy, it was like a great reward for setting things up and making the challenge go live on Thursday.
There are lots of really great stories though, a lot of unusual ones and things I feel like we don't see enough of in the fandom. They make me think of times I or my friends have said, "Gosh, I wish fandom would give me more..." So here is a post to help you find them! There are other fics that I enjoyed and I still haven't read most of them, so I'll probably do another recs post or two in the next few days! Then I will try to remember to come back and add in author names after the reveal.
I wish fandom would give me more stories about queer people like me (and also more Merlin/Will)!
Be So Bold (The Boys' Own Remix) by Anonymous (Merlin/Will, teen, 2303w, remix ofsophinisba)
So there was background Merlin/Will in my Gwen/Morgana backpacking fic. This one brings out that background pairing and also gives a different perspective on the original pairing, which is one of my favorite ways of seeing remixes done. I love Merlin observing Morgana and "Morgana's Gwen"/"the object of Morgana's worldly desires", and I love the idea of him and Will as a young gay couple from a small town, exploring Prague and figuring out what kind of couple they're going to be on their travels. It's not talking about nudity like mine was but it's another kind of exposure, deciding things like whether to hold hands in public. And it's all done in such a sweet and subtle way and it pretty much made me melt (or, as a friend was telling me in chat, made me feel all goopy). ♥
I wish fandom would talk about class once in a while (and give me AUs about the girls, and explicit femslash)
First Up Against the Wall (the grease and diesel oil remix) by Anonymous (Gwen/Morgana, mature, 4453w, remix ofheathershaped)
A friend of mine was talking recently about their frustration that Merlin fic mostly either smooths over the class differences between the characters or uses it as a kink, and very seldom deals with how complicated cross-class relationships often are in real life. This is a funny romantic and sexy fic and not a Serious Story about Class Differences, but I like that those issues are part of it, and I love Merlin and Will as Gwen's mates. Note - I don't think it's necessary to read the original (or, like, know the fandom especially) in order to understand this remix, but I highly recommend Heather's fic as a hot Gwen/Morgana PWP.
I wish fandom would give me moar tentacles (and thoughtful animal transformation stories)
Four Times Arthur Was Seduced By Magic, and One Time He Wasn’t (the five things remix) by Anonymous (Arthur/Merlin, explicit, 4663w, dubious consent, remix ofquerty)
Okay, so this one's marked with tentacles in the tags, those are in two of the five parts and they're great, but what really did it for me was the sex scene where Merlin's turned them both into wolves and then he has sex with Arthur. It's... lkdjfsl kjdkfjs I am not even into animal fic mostly, but that scene is awesome. Also I really liked the way the five pieces of this ended up fitting together.
Also! Up Close, Afar (The Tetrachromatic Remix) by Anonymous (Arthur and Merlin gen, teen, 1949w, remix ofkumquatix
OMG Arthur is trapped in the body of a little bird! Animal transformation is usually done as crack but in this one you really feel for him and it's so lovely and Merlin's going to help him and take care of him! "His heart beats too quickly, so quickly, as quick as it does when he fights for his life, when he fights for someone else's life, but faster than that, faster still. He is wrong, he is broken, he is small. He has never been this small." (((Arthur))) ♥ ♥
I wish fandom would give me more historical AUs, and also more 'what if?' AUs
I want to wake up in Amsterdam (The Golden Age Remix) (Arthur/Merlin, teen, 1230w, remix ofsignificantowl)
The original takes place in present day Amsterdam, and the remix takes place in 17th-century Amsterdam! And again, I am a sucker for vulnerable Arthur!
Or what about a bunch of what if AUs in one! Visited Upon the Son (A Thousand Shattered Futures Remix) by Anonymous (Merlin and Arthur gen, rated teen for violence, 7433w, remix offiercynn)
The original is an AU of the scene in 2x08 where Merlin stops Arthur from killing his father, the one that was so heartbreaking to watch because we know how much it hurts Merlin to do and how much he's fucking himself over by lying to Arthur again. The remix is Merlin going back to that moment again and again, trying to get it right. This fic, man. It was plotty and emotional and exciting but also really gave me a lot to think about as far as the decisions Merlin's made in seasons 2 and 3. I also really like that it's not just an AU because the author decided it would be an AU, but because Merlin is working at it and learning from it.

syllic's Seven Magpies this week and was remembering that was one of the things I loved most about it, that not only we as readers but also Arthur as a character was learning something from the AU about how much better his own Camelot could be.)
I would read remixes if they had more porn (like especially bottom!Arthur gangbang porn)!
