Hitcount meme and other AO3 things

I did this meme just over a year ago, and I thought it would be fun to come back and compare how it looks this year! My top ten fics by AO3 hitcounts:

1. Too Marvelous for Words, Merlin: Arthur/Merlin, 1585 hits
2. Put a Ribbon on It, Merlin: Gwen/Morgana, 893 hits
3. Lady in Waiting, Merlin: Gwen/Morgana and Gwen/knights, 889 hits
4. Dusk in the Market Square, Merlin: Merlin/Aredian, 876 hits
5. Don't Need Forgiving, Merlin: Arthur/Merlin, 804 hits
6. Talking Books and Burning Sticks (The Excellent Adventure Remix), Merlin: Gwen/Merlin and Arthur/Gwen/Merlin, 706 hits
7. Be So Bold, Merlin: Gwen/Morgana, 698 hits
8. Keep Your Head Down, Merlin: Merlin/Uther, 693 hits
9. I'll Be Yr Bird (Remix under the Dirt), Merlin: gennish Arthur/Merlin, 619 hits
10. Deep Breathless Black, Merlin: Merlin/Morgana/octopus, 607 hits

-The same fic is in first place as last year, and still far ahead of everything else. Sometimes I look at this and think, "I should write Arthur/Merlin porn so that more people would read my fics!" But I also love really the fact that there are femslash fics in places 2 and 3, and I would not have that if I wrote Arthur/Merlin porn all the time.
-All in one fandom omg!
-Last year three out of my top ten were fics from challenges hosted on the AO3, and this year only one of them is. I think a lot more people are using the AO3 for their regular reading now and not just going there when a big challenge like Yuletide or Remix happens. Of course, there's also the fact that those challenge fics were more recent then.
-Four of these are noncon or serious dubcon and a couple of the others have... I am not even sure how to group them together but problematic things related to sex happen. Posting that kind of thing can be super lonely and anxious-making, and I really like having AO3 hitcounts as a reminder that I'm not the only one who wants them.
-Sometimes when I look at my fics next to other people's fics that have many thousands of hits I get embarrassed or even sad, but mostly I just look at my fics together and the numbers make me happy.
-Some people get annoyed that their most popular work is not their best work. It is a frequent theme in writer-perspective posts at Fanfic Flamingo: something you wrote in a few hours gets more comments than something you sweated over for months! To this I say, eh. I think I wrote "Too Marvelous for Words" in two or three days. It was fun! I like it and almost everything else here, and I get why they're more popular than some other fics that are more personally meaningful to me.

The other day [personal profile] anatsuno pointed out a great Tumblr post by [personal profile] helens78 about the taboo against saying we like and our proud of our own work. Helens said it would be great if more authors would use the One of My Favorites tag on the AO3 and I agree, so tonight I went in and added it to four of my fics. I had decided to limit myself to five and I can't quite decide between two others. :) And none of those six fics overlap with the ten that are here, but that is okay.

So far only 135 works at the AO3 have that tag. Why not add it to a few of your stories, if you archive there? A lot of readers would like to know about them.

If you are a fan of the AO3 and can afford to do so, consider donating to the OTW! (I just accidentally typed OT3. Seriously, that comes to my fingers more easily than OTW or OTP. My OT3 is in fic #6 in the list above.)

Also also, the OTW is hosting an AO3 Tag Wrangling Open House from 19:00 to 21:00 UTC on April 22nd. In my timezone that is Sunday afternoon or an excellent time for fannish discussion, before frantic Sunday night catchup for the school week and frantic last-minute Remix edits. As much as I love the archive, I rebel a little every time I post a fic because the canonical Merlin character tags are ALL WRONG from my perspective. I am really curious as to why they've chosen to do things that way (and whether they might change it omg!) and also lots of other things about tags. Tags!

Ooh, I like the idea of a 'one of my favorites' tag. I actually do love (most of) my own stories!

I love the idea of the tag, but I know there is no way I could limit myself to just a few and then it would get ridiculous as I tag like half my fics with it. XD

I've seen a couple other folks on my flist revisiting the hit count meme and I'm curious to do it myself and see what changes there are (if any). I didn't write much in the last year, but there has been a huge influx of readers.

Yeah, for me there's also the fact that the last several fics I posted have been posted to AO3 only (well, and ffn and my website, but I mean, not posted to DW/LJ at all, just headers on DW/LJ with links to AO3 to read the fic). So for all those fics, even if there wasn't a challenge to boost the hits, there was still the fact that all the journal readers were being funnelled to AO3, too, whereas before I would post the full fic on DW and so a lot of people would just read here.

Added 3 of my stories to that tag; now it's 139 works!

I should actually _pick_ a story to remix. Instead, I've been reading more and more potential stories... (and refreshing obsessively)

I thought I would've picked a fic on the first day (Monday. I found out about Remix Madness late, late, Sunday evening). Haha.

Potential-wise, I have five fics that caught my eye, but so far no remix strategy/angle yet.

I was sooo tempted to do another remix, but decided to just offer up my stories and hope that someone would pick something and have fun. Maybe next year. I had no idea that this would happen and I'm knee deep in other plot bunnies not to mention real life responsibilities.

I don't even know what fandom I want to remix yet! So many choices! *metaphorically bites fingernails*

It's sooo much easier when the mod(s) pick a remixee for me instead ^^;; Of course, on the other hand, a mod-picked remixee for me would be a Merlin writer or Harry Potter writer.

I hope someone remix something of yours! (And mine.)

LOL. Well, for me, there is only one fandom. Someone has remixed one of my stories. I'm so curious to see what has struck someone's fancy!

I did the formal remix and it was hard. I got paired with someone whose style is very different from mine and I chose a story I really wanted to do, but struggled over almost every word because of the way I remixed it.

Very curious to see the remixes! I can't wait for Monday!

I hope someone has chosen something of yours too. More Merlin fanfic is always a good thing:)

Ooh, I love this meme. I may revisit it myself later, partly because I find AO3 stats bizarrely and nerdily fascinating, but mostly because I like having actual numbers that run contrary to the received wisdom that no one reads gen or femslash.

The "one of my favourites" tag is an excellent idea too. Although, I suspect I'm overthinking it somewhat, because my favourite fics aren't always my best ones and vice versa. Speaking of tags, which is another subject I find nerdily fascinating, I'd be interesting in hearing about why the Merlin tage are wrong for you?

I want to hear about why the Merlin tags are wrong too. Some of them bug me as well, especially the one for Gwen.

Oops, I also meant to say that some of my favorites get no love. I don't understand it.

Oooh, excellent idea. I'm going to tag my favorite fics with a special tag. I feel like some of my favorite fics get no love. I'm going to do this meme too:)

Would love to hear why you don't like the canonical Merlin tags.

(Catching up with reading list on sick day: ooh, I hate the merlin character tags too! Merlin (Arthurian) =/= Merlin (Merlin BBC) =/= Merlin (Sword in Stone) =/= everything else. Same for any Character (Arthurian legends) vs Character (Merlin BBC). Bad enough that there's a ton of "arthurian legends" with vastly different characterisation and spelling every time, plus all the various media remixes done over the centuries. Everyone keeps mixing it up and crossovers with similarly-named characters would just pass unseen and it's all around bad. Sad to have missed that party. Did anything come out of it?)
