Yuletide nominations
I just did my fandom nominations for Yuletide! Nominations close in a little less than two days, so if you're planning on participating and have your heart set on a particular very small fandom, this is the time to make sure it's available. However, even if you don't do nominations this week, you can still play in the challenge with the fandoms other people have nominated. There are LOTS.
I nominated four movies, a TV show, and a book:
Treme I really enjoyed watching this new HBO series set in post-Katrina New Orleans this spring. I'm planning to request either a Jacques/Jannette fic or anything about LaDonna. Someone else had nominated this but I had to renom so I could add Jacques to the character list.
Keeping the Faith I requested this last year and no one wrote it. This time I added three more characters to the list, Jake's mother Ruth and the two minor quirky Asian characters who deserve more development. I'm not sure whether I will request this again.
Antônia This is a fun Brazilian movie about four young women with a dream of becoming a famous hip hop group. It's cheesy and sort of femslashy and I love it, but I don't know if I will request it because I haven't seen the TV series that was a follow-up to the movie, so I feel sort of weird asking for fanfic. If I do request it though I will ask for Barbarah/Preta friendship or femslash.
Leonera This is a not-fun Argentine movie about mothers in prison. I don't know if I will request it because it's so obscure, it feels almost like a mean thing to do to my writer, like getting them to write something that no one but me is going to read. On the other hand, I loved the ending of the movie and I would really like to read an epilogue.
Caramel This is another movie all about the ladies, set in Beirut. I talked about it here when I saw it in the theater a couple years ago.
livrelibre had already nommed it but I figured I would too, just to be safe. I want to watch it again before Yuletide sign-ups so I can decide if/what I want to request.
Octavia E. Butler - Kindred This is a great book! It's been requested in a few past Yuletides but not written as far as I can tell. I don't know if I will request it but I wanted it to be available.
Other fandoms I might possibly request but that I didn't nom because they were taken care of already: Children of Men (three of the five fics in the AO3 are by me ha ha ha), The Lookout (which I requested a couple years ago; come on, JGL fans, this is in the real spirit of Yuletide, Inception is not), and Noah's Arc (I would want either Alex/Trey or Ricky/Junito).
ACTUALLY I'M NOT SURE IF I'LL SIGN UP AT ALL. (Shh don't tell the mods. You're not supposed to do nominations unless you're pretty sure you'll sign up!) I'm less excited about Yuletide than I have been in past years, partly because I'm tired at the end of remix and uncertain about merlinfemfest right now, and apprehensive about the next few months in real life, and partly because I don't feel as dependent on Yuletide for my small fandoms anymore, like I can read or post Pan's Labyrinth or Saving Face fic at the AO3 any time of year and that's almost as good. I will probably play though because I like sharing the Yuletide excitement with everybody else who's doing it.
There's been some great activity at
dark_agenda this week encouraging people to nominate, request, and write for sources created by and starring people of color. Check out the comm and the Chromatic Yuletide Spreadsheet of Doom if that is also an interest of yours. They are also linking to promo posts so it could be a good place to find out about some new tiny fandoms. (I have been meaning for ages to do a post about Leonera and Antônia and haven't finished it yet. Maybe this weekend.)

I am trying to get my fic-writing mojo working this week so I won't feel totally scared to sign up for Yuletide. Just finishing one piece in progress, even a ficlet, would set me up.

I realized yesterday that I also really want to request West Side Story, so I'm not sure what else I will leave out. I had been less excited about Yuletide this year but now I'm starting to get into it again.
