Fannish productivity/lack thereof
So yeah, no writing commitments for me this November, other than some rl projects, merlinfemfest, and maybe yuletide once those assignments go out. I'm happy for my friends who are getting a lot of writing done though! And excited about some of these giant Merlin fics in particular.
Last nightisabear and significantowl and fiercynn and I got together on Skype to record an audio commentary for Merlin 1x10. It was fun but I screwed things up several times, first by breaking at the wrong time and then later by, um, having my recording software crash my computer so I lost my recording. :( :( This has happened a few times while I've been doing podfic and that was sad enough, but in this case it's worse because I can't just start over, I mean what didn't saved was my part of a conversation, without which the other three recordings won't even make sense. So there's going to be a lot of extra editing work and I feel bad, plus I worry that I'll just sound like a dork on the recording anyway. :/ But we will keep going! It still feels like a cool project and I got some Garageband tips from Isabear, so it will probably be a good experience in the long run.

remopodmo and committed to spending at least three hours a week on podficcing this month, so I started in with that by recording a little of netgirl_y2k fic yesterday! That's going well and I'm looking forward to getting that and a few shorter podfics done this month. kink_bingo square. And even though the longer ones are harder and more likely to make GarageBand crash, it does feel good to be making more of those, which are likely to be more satisfying for most listeners.
remopodmo is very small and could use more members, btw! It's okay if you missed the first couple days or if you're new to podficcing, as long as you want to make a commitment to record more podfic this month.

netgirl_y2k has a good post about Morgana's characterization this season. (Link goes to the second cut on that post, if you scroll up there's a review of the latest episode.) The problem is not that Morgana is evil, it's that her evil doesn't make any sense, because the writers haven't bothered explaining it because she's a girl. I find myself nodding along with this and agreeing with the ideas, but I don't have the same feelings about the show because I was never as attached to Morgana as I was to the others. I'm still getting a lot of pleasure out of watching Merlin (the character) and Gwen, and to a lesser extent Arthur and Uther and Gwaine and the others. A lot of the Morgana scenes are hard for me to watch lately though. :/
I realized this week I was feeling really otc about Merlin and thought, it's a good thing I'm not especially attached to particular pairings or I would be so heartbroken these days. So, even though I hadn't been crazy about Gwaine in his first episode, I loved it this week when he told Merlin that he was his friend. I enjoyed this episode a lot. I think I am just old-fashioned in that I like quests a lot, even if they aresrin said about my beloved 2x04) kind of heterosexist quests or (as heather said about this episode) nonsensical plot device type quests. Also Merlin was really pretty, but then that's always true.
Then my favorite bit in the previous episode was when Merlin noticed the bruises on Gwen's wrist and she tried to pretend it was nothing but was physically incapable of lying to him and then she broke down and oh god it was so beautiful. As I was saying last night while we watched 1x10 (the scene where he finds Hunith in the town and notices her black eye) I am a TOTAL SUCKER for Merlin showing concern for a woman who's been hurt. And I mean it's one thing if it's someone we don't know as well like Nimueh (in 1x04, right?) or Hunith or Freya, but this was with OUR GWEN and it just about killed me.
So that was pleasant. My second favorite part of 3x07 was the tension between Merlin and Morgana, which I thought was both really sexy and really hilarious (especially the part he finds out she's coming with them on the quest and he tries to talk to Arthur about it but can barely get the words out).
If I had lots of time and patience and technical skills and hard drive space and...whatever it is that keeps your computer from crashing, I would try to learn how to vid! I now have four fairly detailed vid bunnies. One of them I won't tell you about because it's totally unoriginal, a song that has probably been vidded a hundred times and a pairing that I think the cool kids tend not to like. Then there are two others I came up with recently that I won't tell you about because I might actually try to do them and I would want them to be a Surprise (or two Surprises!)! But I will tell you the one I thought of last week, which would be to do a Merlin/Morgana vid to the R.E.M. song All the Right Friends.
I am talking about the version from the Vanilla Sky soundtrack that was also on the In Time greatest hits album, not the really old version where the lyrics are hard to understand. It would be Merlin POV and all the stuff about "You've been hanging with the wrong crowd" etc. would be about Morgana and her various evil friends and acquaintances. But the really fun part would be the chorus, because there would be all these hateful looks to go with "I don't wanna be with you anymore" but at the same time they would totally give the lie to "I just don't want you anymore" because he is SO OBVIOUSLY HOT FOR HER. I mean yes okay I get it that they keep trying to kill each other. I am saying though, I think this would be a nice opportunity to do something fun and silly with a ship that is usually angsty, and also the song is less than three minutes.
I so do not have the time or other things and I know I shouldn't even be thinking about this, but I will ask anyway: I'm on a MacBook that has iMovie and I have heard some stuff that I don't really understand about different versions of this app. The version that I have says it is version "8.0.6 (821)" and also that it is "iMovie '09". This is okay, right? iMovie '08 is the one to avoid, and that's different from version 8?
