A few Yuletide recs

So much happy small fandom reading! Here are my favorites from what I've read so far this Yuletide - several are for fandoms I've requested in the past or would have requested this year, and the fics have all the things I love - it feels almost as if they were written for me! I hope you like some of them too!

Independence Wars (3164 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: West Side Story (1961)
Rating: Teen And Up, No Archive Warnings Apply
Summary: "If you had all that here, why would you want to go back to Puerto Rico?""Oh, even if you didn't have all that here, why would you want to go back there?"

Maria-centric genfic that talks about her childhood back in Puerto Rico (and goes far beyond the "island of tropic diseases" stereotypes of the movie) and her life as a teenager in New York before she meets Tony. This has politics and racism and family drama but it's mostly just a story about a young girl trying to find her own way in the world, and I love it to tiny bits.

That Which is Altogether Just (1896 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Treme
Rating: General Audiences, Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Toni Bernette, LaDonna Batiste-Williams, Mrs. Brooks
Summary: The way LaDonna pronounces the words "my mother" is an argument that requires no verb. It's just the way Creighton says "New Orleans,"—weighty syllables that prove his point.

LaDonna was probably my favorite character on the show, but I got so used to thinking of her as AWESOME and FIERCE that it never would have occurred to me to look at her the way her mother does here. Like the West Side Story fic, this is just the kind of thing I would have hoped to get if I'd done Yuletide this year, so full of the characters' strength that we saw in canon but giving new insights as well.

Practical Legends (1124 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: The Wire
Rating: Mature, No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Ziggy Sobotka, Omar Little
Summary: Ziggy pulled his arms tight against the cold. The wind here wasn’t as cold as on the docks, but damn it still froze him something solid.

After Treme ended in the spring I decided to try watching David Simon's previous show, The Wire, which is indeed as awesome as everybody says but also hard to watch because of all the violence. There are four fics for the show this year and I'm sure they're all great, but I haven't read the others because I'm still only in the middle of season 3 and I'm not sure if they have spoilers. But this is a missing scene from season 2 (about two characters who never met on the show but hello new head canon!) and it's awesome! It makes sense in canon and Ziggy is so much his fucked up self and Omar is so fascinating even Ziggy has a tiny bit of an idea. This was surprising and great!

Fallen (1180 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Homicide: Life on the Street
Rating: Teen And Up, Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Frank Pembleton, Tim Bayliss
Summary: A missing scene from Season 3's Crosetti episode.

And moving further back in time with the David Simon creations, this actually reminds me a lot of the fic [profile] bossymarmelade wrote for me in Yuletide 2007! It's short but pitch-perfect Frank and Tim, Tim and Frank, THEY ARGUE BECAUSE THEY LOVE! ♥ ♥

Gardens Are Not Made by Singing (3493 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Law & Order: SVU
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences, No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: John Munch/Odafin Tutuola
Summary: The radical nature of potatoes, compost and John Munch.

The setting is New York and the secondary characters are from SVU but I still think of Munch as a Homicide: LoTS character and this fic reminds me of Homicide for the way the character surprises me.

(I feel like Munch doesn't get to do much in SVU, just makes wise-cracks now and then. It doesn't bother me most of the time because I'm happy to focus on the plot - 'cause that's how L&O works - and on OLIVIA, but I loved the way Homicide would explore other parts of the detectives' lives and it made him more of a rounded character.)

Looking Behind Now (2087 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Bend It Like Beckham (2002)/My Beautiful Laundrette (1985) crossover
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences, Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Tony, Omar Ali/Johnny Burfoot
Summary: “How did you decide to go into this business?” Tony asked. “Is it very successful?” “Thinking of a change in occupation, are we?”

This was another great surprise - Tony from Bend It Like Beckham takes his boss's suit to the cleaners! You guys, it's BILB/MBL crossover with canon timelines intact, and it's totally adorable and great!

Four Pencil Sketches (1163 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: English Patient - Michael Ondaatje
Rating: General Audiences, No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Kirpal Singh, Hana Lewis
Summary: "The essence of drawing is the line exploring space."

Remember Kip from The English Patient, played in the movie by Naveen Andrews (Sayid from Lost, or the hot guy in my icon)? Well, even if you don't, this is a really beautifully written character study! You should read it!

Part of Your World (1820 words) by Anonymous
Fandom: Little Mermaid (1989)
Rating: Not Rated, Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings
Characters: Ariel (Little Mermaid), Prince Eric (Little Mermaid)
Summary: Ariel gets what she wanted... but things don't quite turn out the way she expected them to.

Ooooh, goodness. Again, there are other Little Mermaid fics and I'm sure they're probably great, but this is the one that Claudia emailed me about and it starts with the cheerful tone of the movie and what seems like a fairy-tale ending, and then it goes dark and oh man it gets me so bad.
