Rec me some fics!

Okay so it's April! Among other things this means:
-A new round of [community profile] remopodmo to help us all record more podfic for [community profile] amplificathon, [community profile] podficbigbang, or whatever. I always get a ton done during [community profile] remopodmo months. Thank you, [personal profile] cantarina!
-The official start of [community profile] welovepodfic, the Podfic Feedback Challenge, including the week 1 mini-challenge, comment on an old favorite to tell the reader how much it's meant to you.
-Also there will probably be a new challenge at [community profile] kink_bingo! (The mini-challenge post hasn't gone up yet but I'll probably edit this post to link to it when it does.)

Another thing that's happening that started in late March is the People with Disabilities (PWD) Being Awesome Commentwork Fest!, hosted by [personal profile] terajk. You can leave prompts or post fic or drawings or podfic or whatever there.

Hey, speaking of fanworks about people with disabilities, I want to make some! Maybe you can help me. Although I'm paying attention to the [community profile] kink_bingo mini-challenges and doing my best to participate in those, the two big personal goals I've set for myself during this amnesty period are
-finish a blackout of my second bingo card (some images NSFW), and
-make a Characters With Disabilities bingo for the top row of that card.

I only have four squares left to fill for the blackout! One of them is a fic that I'm writing and am pretty sure I can finish. The other three are part of that top row and I don't know how I will fill them yet. Can you help me find stories that I could podfic, featuring characters with disabilities and the kinks vehicular, guns, and body alteration/injury?

Looking around for fic about PWD, I have found more gen than porn, and if I look at shippy stories then it's more angsty relationship stuff with maybe a happy ending of "It's okay there can still be love". Obvs I am all for gen fic and I also enjoy angst and relationship and h/c, but for this particular goal I am especially looking for stories where the disability is there but the focus is more on "damn, this thing we're doing is hot!"

Some of my favorite characters with canonical disabilities are Toph from Avatar, Watson from Sherlock Holmes (especially Jude Law's version), and Charles Xavier from the X-Men movies (including XMFC).

Some other characters I could imagine podficcing about are Roland from Saved!, Teo from Avatar, House from House, Gaeta from BSG, Chris and other characters from The Lookout, and several characters from The Hunger Games books.

And of course they could be folks like Merlin who are not disabled in canon but are in some AUs.

By kb rules they'd need to be at least 500 words and I would prefer that they be less than 7000, though if you know of something awesome that's a little bigger that's cool, do let me know about it. If you drop links in comments please at least mention what fandom they're for, and if your comment includes spoilers then please mention that in the subject line.

If podficcing doesn't work out for all the squares maybe I will write something, so I would take fic prompts as well! Especially interesting to me would be prompts involving the ladies of Merlin.

For those of you who don't know me, my main fandom is Merlin and I'm also into Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who, Community, and a bunch of other fandoms that are listed in my tags.

Thanks so much!

AHHHHH OMG I KNEW I WAS FORGETTING SOMETHING

For XMFC, do you know this wonderful fic? Call My By His Name, by sinuous_curve (http://archiveofourown.org/works/208993?view_adult=true). I think it was written for a kink_bingo body alteration/injury prompt.

Not for your bingo square (because it's a long, plotty fic with just a few sex scenes)... but a great XMFC fic that deals with PWD themes: New Beautiful Things Come, by loneraven (http://raven.dreamwidth.org/691189.html).

Thanks for reccing the PWD Being Awesome fest! As usual, I won't try to write, but will enjoy reading along.

I've just watched XMFC and started exploring the fandom! As a PWD myself (though not very active in that community either in RL or online), I have definitely become intrigued by Charles as PWD.

Great--thanks for the link to rubynye's post. I am excited about the recs, and also about her discussion of how awareness of social justice can add to fanfic. (Like everyone I know, I was appalled by the treatment of women and POC in XMFC, while being fascinated by the creative possibilities for exploring the lead characters in terms of queer and minority identities.)

If you are feeling like acquiring a new fandom, The Eagle/Eagle of the Ninth's major character has a canonical leg injury which (depending on source and interpretation) is more or less disabling.

Hmm, it's not so much a canon difference as it is when the fic takes place, or how. Marcus (the Roman Centurion) sustains a serious leg injury during a battle with the British, in which splinters of wood end up embedded into his leg so it doesn't heal. He can't walk without pain.

Some months later, he finally accedes to having a new surgeon open up his leg to clean out the wound. In the book it takes him eight months to heal, and he does get pretty much back where he was before; he can walk, but says it "won't do for the parade ground" and much later makes a reference to "damn this leg of mine" because it does limit him, but he's not really disabled in any ordinary sense. At one point near the end of the book he has to sit down because his injured leg is shaking under him. I don't remember now if he limps in the movie, but he's not really disabled there either, although I don't remember how much time they imply passes before he is recovered from the surgery.

However, there are a lot of stories which take place before he is healed, and a lot of AUs (of the different-setting variety) have him more disabled by his injury; using a cane or crutch, etc.

Yes, a lot of authors in the fandom are also in Merlin!
