Favorite fic meme and music
Here's the favorite fic meme that's been going around.
Sometimes it's ok to pimp yourself out. Post a list of your top five fic-favorites you've written, regardless of fandom or the reason you love them. This isn't about the BEST things you've written, but what you LOVE most.
These are not in order. I really suck at picking favorites, actually! But these are five fics of mine for which I have some special affection.
Five Things that Never Happened to Stokely Mitchell, The Faculty: Stokely gen and femslash
This is my favorite of my Faculty fics! This was my first explicit femslash and the first time I used the word cunt in a fic. It was not a wild success but there were several people who really did seem to appreciate it. I think that is a nice kind of experience to have when one writes a rare pairing or character, as I've chosen to do more and more since then.
Into That Good Night, Children of Men: Julian/Theo
This was the main fic I wrote for Yuletide last year! I worked really hard on it and felt very uncertain about it but people liked it and that made me so happy!
The Silent Street, LotR: Merry/Pippin
This was the first story I wrote for
waymeet and my first hobbit slash story! It was the first time I'd tried to write a longer story that was relatively canon-compliant and it was really challenging but I was happy with how it turned out and with the response I got from people at the comm! I felt like the experience of writing it helped me understand the characters a lot better.
Thirst, LotR: Merry gen
This was a set of four short ficlets that I wrote this relatively quickly. I like it because it's quiet and not over-the-top like a lot of the fics I'd written before that. I like it also because it's about how much Merry loves his friends.
Not Yourself, LotR: Frodo gen
Eh, I'm not as sure about putting this one on the list. It's not really a fic that I'm especially proud of at this point or that I'm interested in going back to read. I was always a little uneasy about it because it was so much about my kinks! On the other hand I did write it with a lot of passion and I got to know a lot of you through posting it. It was my first big fic (still my longest, I think) and it's still special to me in a lot of ways.
Runners Up (also not in order):
Torn From the Map
He Came to Meet Me
Let No One Put Asunder
Bohemia
Homecoming
And while I'm talking about my own fics, here are five songs I've quoted in them, which you can download if you'd like (at least for the next week). I've shared a couple of these before.
El desaparecido - Manu Chao
The album Clandestino is mostly about undocumented immigrants and the songs are mostly in Spanish, so I was thinking about it while I wrote my fic about Maya and Alejandro, the Dominican characters from Heroes, traveling through South America. I took the title of De prisa, de prisa, rumbo perdido (Hurrying, hurrying, destination lost) from this song.
Hearts and Bones - Paul Simon
This has been one of my favorite songs since I was a teenager (or maybe preteen). Paul Simon wrote it about his brief marriage to Carrie Fisher. I quoted the line "Love like lightning, shaking till it moans" for the title of my Casey/Zeke Halloween drabble Love Like Lightning.
Half Acre - Hem
I guess a lot of people associate this song with an insurance commercial, which is sort of too bad but also nice in that people who wouldn't have heard it otherwise got to hear it through the commercial. I used it for my Frodo/Aragorn fic Torn from the Map that I wrote partly for the "Inside a Song" challenge at
hobbit_smut and partly for
claudia603's birthday two years ago. The only bit that really doesn't fit Frodo is the mention of Michigan. :)
He Came to Meet Me - Hem
What happened with this, just as I was coming up on the deadline and finishing "Torn from the Map" I got to go to a Hem concert and heard them perform both "Half Acre" and this one, which was new at the time. I'd never heard it before and it immediately made me think of a fic
danae_b had written about Pippin coming to Diamond's home after the Quest and the Troubles. So I think it was the next day I was chatting with Dana and I sent her this song and she was like, "OMG, that's totally a Pippin/Diamond song", so I wrote He Came to Meet Me.
Message in a Bottle - The Police
I know people who think this song (and this band) are really annoying but I love this one and the idea that everyone else feels just as alone and abandoned as you do omg. This was the title of my Charlie fic Message in a Bottle but that fic actually had more to do with the George Harrison/Beatles song "Within You Without You", which you can listen to here on YouTube.
