I've been looking forward to it all year and especially since I realized that I'd have a less busy December this year so I'll actually be able to participate. I keep going back to the requested fandom page to see which fandoms people have requested or offered to write. I'm really pleased that all four of the ones I requested have people offering already, and a few people (not many yet, but there's time) have made requests in fandoms I offered to write. I will not be a difficult match. \o/
Sign-ups are open until October 18th and assignments will go out just after that. The FAQ is very long and it's a good idea to look over the whole thing before you sign up, but there's a short version here to help you decide if you want to get involved. You can request three or four fandoms and you need to offer to write at least three.
A thing that I didn't understand until last night is that you can offer to write in as many fandoms as you like (I thought it was only three or four). The organizers ask you to offer a lot of fandoms because it makes matching easier, but it's mentioned elsewhere that for most people it's a good idea to offer only fandoms that you really want to write in. That makes for a better experience for everybody and less people backing out of the challenge after they get their assignments.
As far as what to say in your request details, I found this post to be incredibly helpful. All the details are optional – if the writer can't or doesn't want to include them, they don't have to, but almost all writers appreciate having some kind of prompt – an idea of your preferences, an angle for looking at the canon – to get them going.
And an extra tip from me: Do NOT attempt to fill out the sign-up form after consuming alcohol.
