After posting a lot of short porny podfics over the last few months (and with a few longer porny podfics in the works), I am very happy to present these two longer gen podfics about complicated friendships between lady space travelers as my entry for ladiesbigbang Round 2! Munditia's "Still Life" is a beautiful and moving retelling of Battlestar Galactica canon from the perspective of Anastasia Dualla, with a special focus on her relationship with Starbuck. Rheanna's "Lunch and Other Obscenities" is a very smart and funny story of how Uhura and Gaila overcome major cultural differences.

Thanks to the authors and artists for the chance to add my take on these wonderful works, with special thanks to yue_ix for creating new artwork as a cover for Still Life.

Dear purimgifts writer/graphics person!

Thank you for signing up with one or more of my fandoms! I hope you will find I'm easy to write for. I love gen and ships of all kinds. I said I'd take a maximum rating of Explicit and I've been on kind of a porny streak in my journal lately, but I really am a big fan of friendship stories and character pieces too. I like happy stories and sad stories, h/c, kink, and stories about identity, community, and belief. For the most part I do not like torture in interrogation scenes or cheating in relationships.

I had a really good time with this challenge in 2008 and 2009 and I'm excited about coming back to it. This year I requested only fandoms where I like pretty much all the characters, so even though I'm listing some of my favorites under the cut, I'd be really happy to read about or look at any of the others too. All these fandoms have ladies and a few also have Jewish characters, though in most cases that isn't really developed so there's a lot of room for you to do more, if that's where your interest lies. I'd also be really interested in bringing out Jewish themes or parallels to the Esther story in shows like Merlin or BSG, or casting say Long Feng from Avatar as an evil vizier. Also do whatever you'd like with the pictures!

Thank you all for the lovely wishes and pictures and gifts yesterday. I've enjoyed my birthdays a lot more since I came into online fandom than I ever did before, and I always thought I had an especially good birthday since it's so close to Frodo and Bilbo's (so I could pretend all the hobbit fic getting posted around that time was really for ME), and then this year I got the season premiere of Merlin as a present. I had a good day offline too but I guess I will talk about that in a friends-locked post. Here in public though I want to point to some of the wonderful things people made for me:

My roommate just let me know that they were talking about Battlestar Galactica and Lost on today's episode of the National Public Radio program Speaking of Faith. I haven't listened to it yet and might hold off until I've finished watching BSG, but in general I like the show for thoughtful conversations about religion so I thought I'd pass on the link: TV and Parables of Our Time, so you can listen or download if you're interested. The guest is Diane Winston, a professor of media and religion at USC, and they also talk about and play clips from House and 24.

I posted the Merlin fics at remixthedrabble a few hours ago! The fandom is new since the previous round and there are 11 new drabbles in the mix! Yay, Merlin writers! Three of them are remixes of my fics!

There might be something by me there or in the other fandoms as well! You should go check them out! I am also having fun reading some of the remixed originals, though other times I just read the remixes.

Speaking of Merlin and Morgana, did you see slightlytookish's new fic, Born to Rule the Storm? She does a great job bringing the characters from the show toward some Arthurian legend canon and I really hope the show will develop something like this in the future.

ETA: And also I meant to link to this other good Merlin and Morgana fic that I read a while back: the sole of our shoes are all worn down by hariboo_smirks. /ETA

Also, I don't normally link to f-locked locked posts, but theswearingkind wrote me a ficlet! It is Merlin and Lancelot and Arthur and exile and destiny, and like slightlytookish's you can read it as shippy or as about friends who really care about each other. I love it.

lilian_cho and I are both writing Merlin ficlets at the new prompt board at writing_game. I am so impressed with lilian_cho's ability to sketch whole AUs in just a drabble. Mine are more often different perspectives on canon moments or quiet shippy things, though I did have fun with that Mermaid Gwen/Morgana I did for Claudia. I ought to make that a challenge for myself, to make at least a couple of the ficlets that I do for this round AU.

I had a new disc of Battlestar Galactica come in the mail today (first disc of season 2.5, whatever that means) so I think I'm going to watch an episode or two and then do another batch at remixthedrabble later tonight. That way I'll only have one left for tomorrow morning and can attempt to get my car to the mechanic in the afternoon. *apprehensive*

Claudia and I have watched the miniseries and seven regular episodes so far. ( Read more... )
