This one of those posts where I rec something that's several months old and seems to have been read by everyone in the fandom already, but it's just so good I can't keep it to myself. (Plus, I mentioned it to Claudia this afternoon and she didn't have the link yet.) Us Two Little Gods by

fortassetu is 18,000 words, Arthur/Merlin with some other pairings, and takes place in a period much older and rougher than the fantasy castle setting we see in the show. Merlin is the bard who accompanies the warlord Arthur and helps turn his story into a legend. It's beautiful and painful and so very satisfying. You can start with the master post with warnings (big important ones) and chapter links or skip straight to Part 1.

I had friended

boxofmagic, the Merlin big bang comm, and was looking forward to the fics starting being posted today, but they made an annoucement the other day saying they will all go up on August 5th. I don't know if this was a change of plans or if I had just misunderstood the earlier plan, but I ended up feeling really disappointed when I read the post that was supposed to make me go "Yay lots of big fics coming!" So then it was such a joy to come across this big angsty beautiful thing this afternoon instead.
