Hey so I unfriended a bunch of people on LJ tonight - but not because I don't want to be friends! In most cases it was just because we communicate on Dreamwidth already and I thought I'd cut out the duplication, and for a few LJ-only folks it was because we haven't interacted in a few years. If you want me to add you back for whatever reason just let me know!

Some links and things, mainly aimed at other folks who are interested in spending more time on Dreamwidth )

Yesterday [personal profile] eruthros and [personal profile] thingswithwings posted the Round Four Prize Announcements, including the Arbitrary Mod Prizes. This works as an arbitrary recs list of some of the exciting things posted at [community profile] kink_bingo this June-September, and I was thrilled to get a prize for Best Praxis for my essay about the kinkiness of podfic and my verbally humiliating Azula/Ty Lee podfic. Thank you mods! Look at the sexy banner [personal profile] eruthros made me under the cut!

I am also getting ready to run a podfic for beginners workshop at the [livejournal.com profile] pornspiration comm on LJ next week. I was thinking a series of posts over the course of the week. Let me know if you have suggestions or would like to help out (or make a promo banner)! Anyone over 18 can join the comm, they just keep posts locked for the sake of teambuilding and all.

some pro-Dreamwidth anti-LJ grumbling )

La la la. Oh hey speaking of user interfaces, how about the new gmail? I'm keeping my sophinisba account the same for now (cherry blossoms!) but on my other account I switched to the new look and the Oceans theme. It's so pretty! I love the bit of translucency and the way the modules sometimes seem to be floating over the background - I find it very soothing (even though I don't like being on boats etc. in real life).

Okay so back to podfic talk! The reason I want to do that workshop next week is that it'll overlap with [community profile] pod_aware/[livejournal.com profile] pod_aware! Mod [personal profile] paraka and friends have been working on some podfic meta podcasts that will be posted then, and I'm looking forward to hearing how those turn out. (I will tell you a secret: I spend a lot more time listening to non-fandom podcasts these days than podfics. I find the conversation style easier to follow when I'm riding the bus or whatever than a fic. There are times when I listen to a lot of podfic but I am not doing that now.) [personal profile] paraka would also like to emphasize that you don't have to be a podfic maker to participate in this. You might be someone who likes to listen to podfic, or an author who is okay with people making podfics of their work. As far as I understand it, all you have to do is post something during the week (the something could be a fic or a picspam and doesn't need to be podfic-related) and include a little blurb and a link to a post at the comm. It should be fun and will help us out.

Yuletide

Yuletide signups are up on the AO3! They will be open until…okay I guess we don’t get a deadline, maybe the 17th or maybe the 19th or 20th. If you’re not in a rush though you might want to wait a day or two so as not to pound the servers so hard. Apparently the form is huge and may take a long time to load. People seem to be having better luck with Chrome than other browsers. There’s more information at [livejournal.com profile] yuletide_admin. I have an extra AO3 invite code, so let me know if you need one. I have really enjoyed this challenge for the last three years and I highly recommend it. I'm excited that some of my friends are participating for the first time this year.

Don’t forget that you can also keep up with [community profile] dark_agenda, who are running a subcollection within Yuletide 2010 to encourage and promote fics with chromatic characters and creators, and [community profile] access_fandom has an informal challenge for Yuletide fics about characters with disabilities.

I’ve decided not to sign up myself this year for a combination of reasons, the biggest one being that I’m facing a lot of deadlines in real life right now and I don’t want to risk getting a difficult assignment and having fandom become another source of stress. (There’s a small possibility that I’ll cave though.) Normally I would power through on the strength of my Yuletide squee, but, um… squee harshing )

On Dreamwidth you can see the latest posts tagged yuletide. (I do wish this had inline cut tags like one’s reading list does.) I was using that to follow the wank but then it turned into more and more “Dear Yuletide Writer” posts and those are also cheering me up. Already this morning I found a request by someone I don’t know that’s uncannily similar to what I want from the source, and I might try to write that or something else, even though I’m not signing up. Last year I wrote two extra stories and the year before I wrote five and those were all a lot of fun, even though last year I also had people telling me that reading letters to get ideas for extra stories was Not In the True Spirit of Yuletide. *g* I guess there’s always something.

Hey Merlin fans, [community profile] camelot_fleet is organizing a new project to make audio commentaries to go with Merlin episodes. Get on Skype with a friend or three, watch one of your favorite Merlin episodes, talk about it, record, edit, and post for everyone to share! Doesn't that sound like fun?! I don't really get how the technical parts will work, but I'm sure it's doable and there will be support for newbies at the comm. You do not have to be a [community profile] camelot_fleet regular to participate.

I'll be chatting with [personal profile] such_heights about 2x04, "Lancelot and Guinevere", and probably also with [personal profile] isabear about 1x10, "The Moment of Truth", though I'm happy to step out of the way if a few other people want to do that one, since I know it's a popular episode. Each of these teams could use another person or two, and [personal profile] fly_to_dawn wants collaborators to talk about how awesome Gwen is in "The Once and Future Queen", and then there are all the other episodes! Whee!

Go read more and sign up at the Organization Post!

(I keep thinking I'll finish things and then rec but since I enjoy things most when I'm in the middle of them...)

I am about two thirds of the way through reading [livejournal.com profile] new_kate's epic Arthur/Merlin fic Arcane Asylum and I love it SOOOOOOO MUCH! I was telling a friend the other night it's got so many of my narrative kinks, and so much emotion, so much plot and powerful Merlin, and so much Hunith, and just the right level of angst for my taste. It's like it was made just for me, except that it wasn't so I don't feel any pressure to read through it quickly in order to comment! I'm a slow and easily distracted reader and the fic is loooong (125K) and I've been savoring it for about a week, thinking about it as I'm cooking or riding my bike or falling asleep at night. LOVE.

It is the same author who wrote Steam, the Merlin steampunk big bang that I'm in the middle of listening to as a wonderful podfic by [livejournal.com profile] pennyplainknits! I'm also loving [livejournal.com profile] lunchy_munchy's podfic of [livejournal.com profile] syllic's Seven Magpies, one of my favorite fics from last year's [livejournal.com profile] camelotsolstice.

A wee technical thing - lately the little box for crossposting my entries to LJ keeps getting unchecked. Has anyone else noticed this? I feel a little weird opening up a support request about it because I'm not sure if it's a bug. I mean, I should be paying attention to all the boxes anyway. But I thought it stayed checked before.

I was going to make a giant post about how awesome Dreamwidth is, but my computer's giving me trouble so I guess you'll be spared most of that proselytizing for now. :) I'll just link to the latest dw-news post, which has links to some very helpful resources for newbies and a preview of the new update page that they'll be implementing soon. Along with being intensely shiny, I think this new page is a great example of Dreamwidth asking their users what they want, following through, and responding to feedback as they go. (You know, because their business is about satisfying the users who pay for their service, rather than drawing in ad money. *suppresses much longer rant*)

I've got an appointment at the Apple Store in a few hours, no idea whether they'll fix it then, tell me there's nothing wrong and send me home, or take my beloved computer into custody. D: In any case I'll be going out of town this afternoon and won't be back until Tuesday, so even if I get to take my Macbook with me I probably won't be online much. If I don't answer your e-mail or fail to comment on your awesome [community profile] femslash10 story, I promise it's nothing personal!
sophinisba: Gwen looking sexy from Merlin season 2 promo pics (gwen by inwhatfurnace)
LJ's just brought out a new "feature" that gives you the option of posting any or all of your LJ comments to Facebook or Twitter. This includes screened comments and comments to f-locked entries, so if I post about my job or my personal life and someone with that setting turned on comments, the subject of my post and a link to it will show up on their Facebook page without me even knowing about it. There's more information at the latest news post.

I am really, really not okay with this. I don't believe any of my LJ friends would intentionally violate my privacy this way (and I hope you won't crosspost your comments to my public entries either), but the way it's set up makes it way too easy to do by accident.

I'm going to start disabling LJ comments on my f-locked entries until this gets resolved. I'll update access on my Dreamwidth account so anyone who can see my posts on LJ should be able to comment on Dreamwidth with OpenID. If you're having trouble with OpenID, talk to me about it and/or check out [community profile] spn_bitesized's lovely Guide to Using OpenID. Let me know if you'd like a DW account creation code (I have lots) or if you have a DW account already and would like access there.

Sorry, LJ friends, I know a lot of you don't want to bother logging in to another account or using OpenID, but this situation is really freaking me out.
sophinisba: Gwen looking sexy from Merlin season 2 promo pics (gwen by inwhatfurnace)
First of all, a general PSA about crossposting across LJ and Dreamwidth. Did you know you can set it up so there are automatic links in both directions? All my Dreamwidth posts link to their LJ equivalents, and the LJ posts link back (with comment counts!). This was easy to set up and is really helpful to me when I'm going back and forth to answer comments on my own journal, and also helpful when other people do it because it makes it easy for me to read both conversations.

If you want to set this up you go to the Other Sites account settings on Dreamwidth; you might need to click on "Change" to add the link from Dreamwidth to LJ.

And now, a whine! Aw and I thought I was being so clever! )

ETA: Thanks to a suggestion from [personal profile] shopfront, [livejournal.com profile] camelot_remix! A syndicated feed LJ users can subscribe to without giving the mod(s) access to their journals! :)
sophinisba: Merlin smiling with forest background (ep. 1.04) (merlin smiling by miakun)
Hey all, I'm finally getting started with that Merlin remix challenge I've talked about a few times. I'm thinking signups in another week or so and fics due in October (a shorter writing period to beat the holiday rush). Announcements will be crossposted at [personal profile] camelotremix/[livejournal.com profile] camelotremix and the fics will be hosted at the AO3.

Both journals and the AO3 are completely bare-bones right now. Anybody feel like making up a layout or a banner for publicity? Or maybe just pointing me in the direction of an OT4 or Camelot icon for posting over there?

Is anyone interested in co-modding? Or if that sounds like too much commitment, anybody up for helping me get things set up this week? I wrote a draft of a FAQ post this morning and would like to have a friend or two read it over before I put it up.

Thank you!
sophinisba: Frodo smiling (frodo happy by proverb)
I know I've gone back and forth on this, but lately I've been wanting to be on Dreamwidth more, so tonight I subscribed or resubscribed to the Dreamwidth journals of a bunch of my friends who crosspost, and I set up a reading filter on LJ so I won't be seeing the duplicate posts all the time. If you'd just as soon we cut the connection on LJ just let me know, I'm fine either way. Also let me know if you're crossposting and we aren't friended on Dreamwidth yet, or if you're thinking about crossposting but find it confusing. (I'm confused too, but I will do my best to help.)

I'd sort of been holding off on doing this because I'd stopped using filters on LJ last year (it was too confusing for me with the crossposting) and I liked that feeling of just, if I have you friended it means I'm reading you. These days if I've stopped communicating with someone I usually unfriend them and I don't filter anyone out. So I did some of that tonight too, unfriended some people on LJ, and it's not that any of you/them have offended me or that I don't like you or whatever (some of you I really like!), just that we've moved apart. But if you want me to add you back just say so.

OpenID is not that bad! )

And now I have a question for people who understand the Dreamwidth importer better than I do. I imported my whole journal, including the comments, last July and I haven't done it since. I always felt a little weird about importing the comments and I wouldn't want to do that again, but I'd like to know what would happen now if I imported the posts again. Will it create duplicate posts? Occasionally I'll edit just the LJ side of a post. Does that affect whether the importer creates duplicates? There's really just one post... )

sophinisba: Gwen looking sexy from Merlin season 2 promo pics (yuletide stress by liviapenn)
So, I've been crossposting all my entries to Dreamwidth and LJ since July. The crossposting function is really easy to use and allows you to edit both posts at once. I think this is great. I read both f-lists every day and comment some, though most of the posts I see on Dreamwidth are just duplicates of ones I see on LJ. And like my own posts, my friends' posts usually have ten times more comments on LJ than they do on Dreamwidth, so it's more interesting to read them on LJ. This makes me a little sad, but maybe it shouldn't, and maybe I've been too passive about it all, I don't know.

I think I'm going to start adding the automatic links from my LJ entries to the Dreamwidth ones though. (I think they'd be more useful if they worked the other way around, but alas.) I wasn't going to do this at first because I thought it would be annoying to people who just want to stay on LJ, and also they'd look silly because almost all of them will say "0 comments on Dreamwidth". On the other hand, links are useful! For people that I follow on both sites I've been trying to comment on Dreamwidth if I know they're Dreamwidth enthusiasts (like [personal profile] trascendenza and [personal profile] msilverstar), so those links have been helpful for me as a reader/commenter, and I figure they'll be helpful for me as a journaler too, sort of like my tags and my fic index are useful for readers but even more useful for me. Comments on LJ will definitely still be open and welcome, but I'll just put in this reminder that I welcome them on Dreamwidth too.

I think most of you have Dreamwidth accounts already but if anyone needs an invite code I've got a bunch, and there's also commenting with OpenID.

In other news, I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000. This is a challenge where the mod gives you a picture and you use it as inspiration for a fic of exactly 1000 words in any fandom. I think this looks like a lot of fun, even though the theme this year is food, which is not really something I get excited about writing about. The funny thing is that I've never managed to sign up for this challenge before but I have written four stories of exactly 1000 words in the past year. (I considered doing a set of ten drabbles for [livejournal.com profile] remixredux09 too and I think it could have worked well for that fic, but I was afraid of getting stuck in a rut, and I'm glad I went with something a little longer instead.) I think there is generally not much feedback on this challenge (unless you're, you know, [personal profile] astolat writing NC-17 Arthur/Merlin or something) but that's okay. There is also not much stress because it's not an exchange.

Speaking of which, best wishes to everyone struggling to finish up their holiday fest assignments, and also to students and teachers struggling to finish up the semester. (I had my last class today and it sucked, really left me with a bad taste in my mouth and a bad feeling about the semester, but at least it's over.)

So for, I don't know, maybe the last week or so, LJ's been showing me everything in ?style=mine, even when I'm using the plain url. Maybe it's been going on longer than that but at first I didn't notice because I just thought, Yay, more people are using sensible, easy-to-read LJ styles like mine! So I didn't think it was really a change. But now I see that it's everything. And for the most part I'm happy because I can read everything easily without having to click on my bookmarklet all the time. But on the other hand I know people put work into their fancy layouts and all and it's just, sort of disconcerting, and weird not to be seeing what other people are seeing. Like, is this a new feature I didn't hear about? Dreamwidth is still showing me all the different styles. Is it a box I checked in LJ settings? Is the same thing happening for you?

ETA: Solved by [personal profile] heathershaped, it's a thing in the navigation bar. So now the question is, should I keep it that way? Are you using it? /ETA

In other news, Claudia and Baranduin and I (you too, Hanarobi?) are starting in on Battlestar Galactica this again! C. and I watched Razor last night and weren't especially thrilled with it but we're excited to move on to the last season, and I for one am looking forward to exploring the fandom once I've seen how it all ends.

[livejournal.com profile] hyel wrote a great Merlin AU with Gwen and Morgana as pirates, Guinevere of the High Seas, and there's some good discussion in the comments about why Gwen so seldom gets the starring role in fics, even though almost everybody tends to like her. [livejournal.com profile] aralias talked about this some when she reposted her remix, Fairytale Romance (The Happy Endings Remix).

The Gwen/Morgana Thingathon looks like fun.

[livejournal.com profile] boxofmagic fics are up with a lovely fic archive. I especially like skin number 2 though I wish there were one page with links to all the fics with their authors. I'm a slow reader and feeling pretty overwhelmed but also happy. two little recs )

Here are three small pieces of computer-related happiness:

27. Computer parts arriving quickly
Sunday I was upset because my laptop battery, which is less than two years old, is such junk that it lasts about fifteen minutes, and my power adapter started getting fussy on Sunday so it had to be positioned just so in order to get it to work. So I sent away for new ones to replace them, and I am happy about how quickly the replacements arrived – the adapter yesterday and the battery today.

grumble )

28. LJ and Dreamwidth stuff
a. ?style=mine is so great! this and preview working on Dreamwidth )

29. Watching TV on the Internet
Sometimes I do downloads but today I will just talk about how much I love legitimate ways of watching TV on the Internet, like hulu.com and Netflix. If you have a membership with Netflix there are also a whole lot of movies and TV shows that you can watch streaming on the Internet for free. I watched the whole first season of New Who this way and then I was hooked so I watched the rest on DVD. For a long time they only had this set up to work on Internet Explorer but now it works on Firefox too. Hooray! I watch The Daily Show on Hulu and have watched some other shows on their networks' websites, though those tend not to work as well. This works so well for me. The only TV in our apartment is a tiny one with bad reception in my roommate's bedroom, but when I watch on my laptop it's right in front of me and I usually wear headphones and it is just generally really convenient and nice. I love that I no longer have to pay attention to when my favorite shows are on or make sure I record them or whatever. I just go and get them whenever I want to watch them.
sophinisba: Gwen looking sexy from Merlin season 2 promo pics (goddess)
Today I had lunch at a Chinese restaurant and my fortune cookie said, "Share your happiness with others today." :D

I'm happy because [livejournal.com profile] smaragbird wrote a New Year's Resolution fic for Yuletide based on my request for a story about Luke (that is Chiwetel Ejiofor's character) from Children of Men and his mention toward the end of the movie that he had a sister. Children of Men fic, you guys, I'm not the only one who writes it hooray! [livejournal.com profile] smaragbird did Luke/Patrick growing up and falling in love as the world is falling apart! Go read it and share in my angsty apocalyptic happiness! Children of the Fall

In other news, the preview function on Dreamwidth never works for me. I always just get a message saying, "Sorry, there was a problem." I don't see this as a known issue on the Support page. Has anyone else run into it? I don't like not being able to test my (frequently faulty) html before I hit post.
sophinisba: Katie Jackson as wide-eyed hobbit girl in FotR (wee hobbit lass)
I think I'm happy that I imported/exported my journal to Dreamwidth today. Anyway I'm happy that it seemed to go very smoothly and only took a couple minutes. I was worried that all my old entries would flood the "reading" pages of my "subscribers" but they don't seem to have shown up there at all, so that's a relief. :) I have no intention of leaving LJ or disabling comments on LJ posts, but I think it'll be nice to have the other one in addition and maybe I'll get to meet some new people, which is always nice. The truth is I feel a little nervous and shy about posting to Dth (following [livejournal.com profile] iamsab I'm using this abbreviation instead of DW because, omg, Doctor Who), that it seems more public somehow even though I'll be using the same security settings I do on LJ and I haven't really given any new people access there, though I probably will in the future. Anyway, I've been meaning to copy and start crossposting for a while so it's exciting to finally be doing it.

I'm also happy that people are commenting on the writing meme I posted earlier today and in particular that a couple people have continued things I was writing. (LotR and Merlin fandoms so far but I'm planning on adding a new one in a bit and maybe I'll get some other prompts…) Usually commentfic is not my favorite thing because it's harder to edit and tag and index than fic in its own post, but I also really like the back and forth of writing with other people and wish I got to do it more often. I think it would be really neat if some of the threads branched off in different directions with different writers, like starting from [livejournal.com profile] claudia603's or [livejournal.com profile] baranduin's first line you could go any direction with any fandom you wanted.

I think I'm going to go ahead and copy my journal to Dreamwidth today and then start crossposting from there. LJ will still be my main journal because this is where most of my friends hang out.

I also think I'm going to make all my entries on InsaneJournal private and then stop updating there.

Anyone have any objections or advice?
sophinisba: Frodo smiling (frodo happy by proverb)
Yesterday I read a really lovely Merlin fic and I was thinking, "I need to rec this so that [livejournal.com profile] claudia603 will see it!" Then I got to the end and saw that the fic had been posted in February and already had three pages of comments, including one from Claudia, so I decided not to bother posting. But then today I realized that was silly because, hey, I loved the fic, why not say so? So anyway,

Into His Own by [livejournal.com profile] sarcasticbabble, Merlin/Arthur, 8500 words and rated R, though most of it reads like a gen fic. It's about Merlin going off on his own after Arthur finds out, and Merlin coming into his own as a sorcerer while Arthur does as a King. I really loved the language of this. There is a lot of M/A fic that's fun and a little silly, that makes a lot of Arthur's prattishness and has a lot of little clever asides and then sex and it's, you know, I enjoy that too, but I think this more restrained and weighty kind of fic is my favorite. It's the kind of thing where you can recognize the characters that are fun and adorable on the show but you also see them growing into the old legends, and the writing feels right for that.

It reminded me of a couple other fics that I also love, also dealing with lots of bad stuff happening and Arthur and Merlin being separated:

All the Laughter from Before by [livejournal.com profile] waldorph, M/A, 5,500+ words, R, which also comes with a great podfic made by the author.

Who Is Tied to Someone Else's Glove by [livejournal.com profile] allira_dream, 2000+ words, Gwen/Arthur with heavily implied Arthur/Merlin, Gwen/Morgana and Gwen/Lancelot, PG-13. Claudia and [livejournal.com profile] layne67 and I were talking last week about how much we like Arthur's way of saying Gwen's name and wondering how they might get together, whether on the show or in some hypothetical really awesome fic that we would write. :) And…we weren't really able to come up with much, but I do really like the relationship between them in this fic, and in particular the way he asks her to marry him.

I've reposted my Yuletide fics and updated my fic index with everything I could find (even the haikus omg), plus a little reorganizing that I think is helpful. I've also been messing around with my journal's tags, though there's still a lot more to be done there (especially fixing those dumb links that I put in fic entries).

I signed up for [livejournal.com profile] remixredux08 earlier tonight and I'm hoping that when my remixer gets here they'll have an easy time finding things. If you were thinking about participating, remember that sign-ups close tomorrow night! More info here.

I've also just edited my LJ profile a wee bit – went in there to fix the tag links but ended up adding a few interests and other things. I like that it's now possible to choose who can see your birthday and your location. I've never had a problem with sharing that stuff with other people in fandom, but I didn't like the idea that someone who knows me from RL being able to recognize me just by glancing at my profile. So I've set that info to friends-only.

Speaking of LJ, I'm letting my paid account run out at the end of the month. I'm a little bummed about giving up the extra userpics, but otherwise it shouldn't be a big deal. I decided last summer that I wasn't comfortable giving LiveJournal money anymore, and since their policies haven't improved I don't want to go back on that now. Likewise, I'd feel silly and hypocritical having my friends giving them money on my behalf, so please, no gifts to this account, though I appreciate the thought and am thankful for the LJ gifts some of you have given me in the past.

I probably won't be around until Monday. I'm planning to see the movie Definitely, Maybe tomorrow and very much looking forward to watching the Oscars Sunday night. I hope you all have a lovely weekend.
